242 has full time, as you know, but the 231 has wide aftermarket support. If you don't plan to upgrade the internals, I'd go with a 242. It's what I'm hoping to find for the MJ.

I dont plan to do the internals. Just a hack n tap eventually.

Someone told me its a weaker housing. I dont believe that. I do believe that it breaks more often because its lower, but i have a TC skid.

if you dont beat the **** out of your rig you'll be fine with a 242. Some people say they internals are weaker, but there aren't exactly a lot of cases of busted 242s. AWD sounds fun for winter.

And that sells me on keeping a 242...now just to find one.

As a thought on a 242, they are a bit pickier on how they shift. Sometimes it can take a bit to get it to engage/disengage while the 231 is instantaneous.
