Just acquired my first Jeep. 99 Cherokee 4Dr Sport 2wd with 136K miles and the 4.0. I replaced the serpentine belt and idler pulley but still getting this weird squeal. I used the search but haven't found similar symptoms. It DOESN'T squeal in reverse, idling, or with the ac on/off. It DOES squeal when taking off in 1st gear, and for the low end of 2nd gear. Also will do short squeal when going over a speed bump but on the down side of the bump. I figure if it is a different pulley it would squeal when idling and generally most of time while its running? When I put on the new belt I didn't have it tight all the way and it squealed which after hearing the belt squeal, this mysterious squeal sounds similar but not the same. When cruising in 3rd through 5th it NEVER makes that sound. Just 1st and most of 2nd gear and jolting bumps.

i get a vibration in my steering wheel between 40 and 50. any idea what that might be?
also can you mount a winch to a brush guard or is it not structurally sound?

Well like I said, when I put the new belt on I didn't tighten it enough and the noise the new belt made is similar but its not the same noise as the one thats bothering me. I tightened it up more and got the belt squeal out but still making the mysterious intermittent squeal. I used a Gatorback belt to replace the old one. Also before putting the new belt on, I tightened the old belt, drove, came back and tightened some more, etc and it definitely wasn't the issue.

Im sure someone else will add some info but thats where I would start looking. And for mounting a winch to a brush guard; I wouldn't recommend it but thats based off of the way my brush guard mounted to my ZR2 S10. Never seen how Cherokee brush guards mount. The mounting might be sufficient enough for winching but my guess is the brush guard isn't strong enough for any 'real' winching.

New to Cherokees but in general it could be a few different things. Tires out of balance, slightly bent rim, or a bent/warped/out of balance rotor. Maybe bad wheel bearing could cause that also? But I guess you would hear that. Maybe try rotating tires and see if it still does it. I would imagine if it does then it wont be a rim/balance issue.

Do some research then start with the most likely/ cheapest fix.
Don't assume anything get underneath and shake everything first.
As for the winch,
Only feel safe if you trust a helicopter to lift your XJ out of the woods by your mounting point.
People can get hurt real bad if any thing lets loose. Just sayn.

Need to swap my transfer case. Whats everyones opinion on 242 vs 231. I currently have a 242.
Also, if i go to a 231 will i need a new drive shaft?
