Auto or manual? That noise for reverse can be pretty iffy.

Otherwise...

If it's for winter, make sure all of the basics are in order. These things are pretty good about showing issues off, so if everything's in order and the noise isn't a concern, go for it

^ Thanks Jake! The ad didn't say it, but most likely it's auto. He's asking $1,500, which seems like a decent price.

Probably transmission fluid has never been changed Rust is the #1 enemy on these things. Not much wrong you'll find with a 1999 aside from the usual XJ problems like lack of maintenance, rust, cracked exhaust manifolds, and the power window lock switch.

hey guys, i have two 99 xj's, one auto, one manual. auto has bad motor, manual has no title. so i'm swapping good motor from manual into the auto jeep. question is, is there anything that needs to be switched from motor to motor? flywheel or anything? never taken a motor off a transmission before.

I'm pretty sure you'll need to swap the flywheel to a flexplate.

Selling off the manual trans?

No love for the manual?

Yeah the auto has a flex plate bolted to the torque converter, manual has a proper flywheel and clutch.

thanks that gives me something to go on. the only reason i bought the auto jeep is because it was cheap and a friend needed the $. i'm not keeping it, i already have a jeep that i'm working on now that is a super clean 5 speed (in sig). auto jeep getting sold to pay for last things i need for my that jeep. i have three cherokee's, it gets confusing sometimes. definitely no love for the auto, won't own one. drove 6 hours for my 98 because it was a clean 5 speed.

anything special i need to know about swapping flex plate over or is it basically self explanatory once i look at it?

I've never done it but, I'm guessing you could unbolt the engine from the flex plate, leave it there, with 5spd engine out undolt flywheel, bolt in the engine to flex plate in the auto.

2001 Jeep Cherokee Sport XJ, Weird Automatic Transmission Problem
Hi guys, I enjoy reading all your posts and I think you are one smart group of fellas, so I thought I would put this out here and see if anybody has any thoughts on what could be going on here. Don't worry about getting too technical, I'll look up anything I don't understand. Sorry this is kinda long, but I think all the facts are in here so please keep reading. Any ideas you can give me will be greatly appreciated!

So, my 2001 Jeep that only has 24,120 miles on it (yes, that's the true mileage -the odometer has not rolled over), died in traffic the other night. It wouldn't move in any gear I put it in - like I didn't have a transmission at all! The engine is running perfectly and has no problems at all. The trans just faded away while in second gear and then flat-out would not engage again at that point. Prior to that I noticed it was having trouble shifting and I really had to stomp on the gas to get the car moving at all. It was lurching badly on both upshift and when I took my foot off the gas. BUT: when I shut the car off for a few minutes and restarted, the trans would engage and work for a couple minutes and then fail completely again. I let the car sit for a whole day and then drove it and it was fine - like it had no problem at all! Driving it around over the course of that day I noticed the transmission performance started to degrade again, the trouble shifting and the lurching began again. So I had a shop look at it. It sat for a day at their shop before they could get to it, and of course they found nothing wrong with it! But since the trans had never been serviced I had them change the filter and the fluid, hoping that was the problem. Nope, last night it did the same thing - it was fine at first and the more I drove it the worse it became. I barely got it home! The shop refused to tell me what they did to diagnose the trans or how they did it, but I don't see a charge for any sort of computer diagnostic on the invoice. And now the trans is leaking and it wasn't before!

The particulars of the car are: It's the stock engine 6cyl. 4.0l, auto trans. I bought the car new back in Nov of 2000, it has not been modified from stock in any way other than I recently bought 4 new tires and had to go up to the 235 size to get the Goodyear radial tire I wanted. All four tires are the same size. The trans issues started about 2 months after the tire purchase. It's never been off-road because it's a girl Jeep and doesn't play in the dirt. I didn't have any leaks anywhere before the shop worked on it, but I do now. I notice no smell at all from the car. I'm very hard of hearing so I can't tell if it's making any noise or not. I don't notice any vibrations, just that lurching. The check engine light is NOT on, but I wonder how significant that is on a 13 year old car that could have an unknown issue with the on-board computer? Lots of things can go wrong with a 13 year old computer, I know that cause I worked in computer support for 10 years! Anyway, I hope this can be solved cause I do love this car, it's been the best car I ever owned and I would HATE to have to give it up! Thanks for reading this far!

Its easy, unbolt the torque converter from the flexplate on the auto motor(4 bolts inside the inspection cover, requires two people unless you get creative. You have to spin the crank to get to each of them, one at a time.) When the motor is out, mark the flex plate and the little spacer thing so its easy to put them back on in the right orientation.

Pull the flex plate off the motor, put it on the motor from the manual jeep after you remove the flywheel. Reinstall motor. Make sure to put some thread locker on the flexplate bolts and the flexplate to torque converter bolts.

Installed my new intake and shortly after a test run my gauges drop and radio shuts off ? The radio fuse is good, I'm not understanding

Same happened to me and 15 minutes later my alt died.

Check your battery and alt with a multimeter.
