Anyone with A-pillar lights, is there any detriment to having those? Are they ever in the way? Blocking view? Anyone run them doorless?
I'm just considering my options.

I have then with big kc daylighters on them. They get in the way sometimes. You could get some led duallys and put them there.

Like I said, lighting isn't a priority right now, so I'm just looking at options.

I'd pick up some extra fluids (trans fluid, appropriately diluted antifreeze, oil) to take with as well. Keep them and your tools accessible when packing.
Finally, if you're towing a trailer, pay attention to your transmission and don't push it too hard.
A thought: For a trip this long, you may be better off renting a truck and trailer, if you have a lot of stuff and would otherwise have to tow it. The military will reimburse your moving expenses if your S1 files the right paperwork. While you won't make as big of a profit as if you tow with your XJ, you're also less likely to blow a transmission in the middle of Nevada.

In addition to the suggestions thus far, I'd check plugs, wires (if you have them), distributor & rotor, hoses, air filter, and serpentine belt. If they haven't been replaced recently, replace them. For the serpentine belt, if it's not new then get a new one and keep the old as a spare. Check your tire wear and pressure, make sure your spare is inflated and not just a "spare flat."
