3 possibilities:
#1- Oil entering your intake (maybe the breather hose)
#2- Intake Valve Stem seal
#3- Bad piston rings

do both a wet and dry compression test and a leakdown test. That should point us to either the rings or the valve seals, and on which cylinder.
A temporary fix would be to try "Restore" - you can find it in auto parts stores. Do this after the tests though

Ok what did I do. I have put in a new water pump n thermostat. I am burning oil was going to work on that in the coming weeks. I was checking seals n had it sitting at idle for like 15 min still no heat decided I was going to drive it up n down the street for a few n it died when I put it into reverse. So I say ok restart n same thing when I open the hood I have a little smoke but I don't think it was bad I spilled a little when refilling things.

Wiring question on '87 Cherokee that had the wiring from the fitting on the bottom of the manifold where it connects to the exhaust, (3 wires coming out of white fitting, Red, Green & Black to a 3 wire connection, (missing), then becoming a two wire connection, (Green & Black), that is connected to the small sensor on the cable coming out of the transmission. Following a plast tarp that wrapped my front driveshaft, and ripped out the connection, I found that the speedometer doesn't function. I presume the Green & Black can simply be spliced back together, however with about 3' of wiring missing and no 3 to 2 wire connector or harness available I'm perplexed where the red wire connects. Suggestions appreciated.where
More damage and some answers with additional quesions: OK, found that the 3 wires coming from the manifold sensor have noting to do with the speedometer sensor at the transmission. These 3 wires were pulled from a black plastic female connection, and they plug into same with small rubber seals to keep moisture from the plug. I found this plug and replaced the wires. Then discovered that the hose connected to the fitting at the top of the front FWD differential had been ripped loose. (Possible vacuum hose?). Can only find about 8" of the remaining hose, and am requesting suggestions as to where this hose is supposed to connect? Also still looking to discover where the broken two wires from the transmission sensor connect, as I'm missing all of this wire except for the first 3' coming forward from the transmission/speedometer sensor at the transmission. Needless to say No Speedometer or odometer. Further update from Jeep Mechanic: Broken hose from the differential is simply a breather hose and can be replaced and tied off in the engine compartment. Two wires from the transmission sensor were diagnosed as being "Cruise Control" wiring. So other than the none operational speedometer, appears that car is fully operational for now. Thanks to those who responded.

Our 95 XJ has turned in to my daily driver as my wife is selling her car and taking over mine. (WTF? /shrug) I've been trouble shooting various small problems and it's time to pull the dash bezel and put in a new cable to the blend door and replace/repair a couple of switches and the cigarette lighter.
Is there any reason I can't drive it while I have the dash bezel off? I've already taken the lower part off and have things held up with wire ties and it seems to be working.
Thanks

Alright guys, I tried doing a search on this but everytime I try and click enter it brings me to ebay? Don't know what that's all about.
Anyways, I am getting no power to the Jeep. The first time it happened I just went to start it like I normally would and then it just cut out with no power at all. Didn't even crank. I tried jumping it and got my lights on, but then when I tried starting it it didn't crank once again. Then I just attempted charging it and got absolutely nothing with it. Brought it to autozone to have it checked and they said it has 12.6 volts? But he offered to charge it still. I am so confused at to what the problem could be. I am pretty sure it had good connections and everything. Any ideas?
96 xj stock w/no mods. Battery is a duralast gold top. Just bought the battery a couple months ago.
