Hey guys. Bought a 99 xj a week ago. Just noticed the other day that it's dripping oil near the drain plug onto the ground. The plug seems to be tight so I don't think it's from there, but the whole bottom of the pan is oily. After inspecting under the hood, there's lots of grime so I can't tell where it's coming from. It's been parked for the last 3 days and the spot has grown to 4 inches in diameter. Any ideas where it's coming from? Head gasket maybe?

The first thing you need to do is take that thing in and completely clean the engine. Spray it all down with engine degreaser and let it sit for 5-15 min, then take a pressure washer (if available) to it and make sure you have a squeaky clean block and around the outside of your mating surfaces.
Then take it for a drive...no, not in the mud (I know you want to). It helps if it's not rainy or wet out. After running it, leave it sit for about 1/2 hour then crawl underneath and check for visible signs of leakage. If you don't see anything, get yourself a strip of clean cardboard (like a disassembled box) and slide it under the engine. In the morning, check the cardboard for any signs of drippage. If you see none, crawl underneath for a visual.
Keep checking constantly from that point until you see where it's coming from...it should be fairly easy to see if you've cleaned your engine properly.
