XJ Ask the Question Thread
I have a 01' 4.0. When I bought it the PO told me he pulled the rear defroster relay and used it to replace the front wiper relay (said they were the same part). does anyone know the location of the rear defroster relay? And he said "relay", I asked if he meant "fuse".
Also, I have a chance to buy back a set of cragar V-5s that used to be on my old TJ. They're 15x8 with 3.75 back spacing. Is the bs OK on them, I'll never go bigger than 31x10.5 with the cherokee (and thats probably 1 years down the road)
Thanks

Throwing codes 12 (recent battery or computer disconnect) & 17 (Engine stays cool too long)
Not too worried about #12, even though it's been forever since I've disconnected either, #17 is definitely a truth fact though. I recently replaced the thermostat from a 160* t-stat to a 195* t-stat and it STILL scarcely hits operating temps. I'm quite sure it's the temp sensor/sending unit I'm just looking for recommendations on which ones to get and which to stay away from.
RockAuto.com sells Airtex/Wells (which I've heard wonderful things about their fuel pumps
), Standard Motor Products, Delphi (which I've always had good experience with), and AC Delco (also good from my experiences).
Anyone have any other suggestions or warnings?

I am inherently untrustful of any product where the manufacturer won't tell you what's in it.
Let's be honest. The label was pure rhetoric. Nuff said?
salad, maybe a site specific search on consumer reports or similar regarding friction increasing additives?

Moderate rocks, some mud.
Yes, I air down. I am trying to decide if I should go to 17" wheels.
With a 15" wheel, there seem to be more options on aspect ratios.
I can get higher tire height to width.

On what kind of terrain? Do you plan to air down your tires for better traction?
32" is a dying tire size anyway. All the major manufacturers still sell in 15" wheel sizes, up to at least a 33" tire. Most go up to 37" on 15" wheels.
It is nearly gone from production vehicles, but there is still a huge aftermarket demand for XXxXXx15 tires

I'd stick with 15s unless you plan to upgrade your brakes, which few XJ drivers do

Had to replace water pump because it was leaking, suggested I go ahead and replace older water pump.
Jeep was not over heating prior to replacing water pump. Started jeep tested for about 30 minutes with no issues, no leak. Then I started to drive around. Temp gauge jumped through the roof. Indicator said Transmission temp was too high. Do I need to replace the thermostat? or anyone have any suggestions?

new to jeep world starting with a well worn 1990 xj .. to the point I need a little help with transfer case shift problem ..first this is automatic.. 4x4 shift patern is 2h-4h-n-4L doe's this tx case use a vacuum motor to assist shift to 4L as mine will shift from 2h to4h . but will not go to neutral or4L .
"To engage, shift the transfer case lever from 2H to 4H while the vehicle is moving at any legal speed". I LET OFF THE GAS, THROW THE LEVER, TAP THE GAS AND LET OFF.
4L position: " To engage, slow the vehicle to 2-3 MPH , shift the transmission to Neutral, then shift the transfer lever to the right and pull firmly rearward to 4L".
TO SHIFT OUT OF 4L, SHIFT THE TRANSMISSION INTO NEUTRAL WITH THE VEHICLE STOPPED, SHIFT THE TRANSFER CASE LEVER TO 2H, THEN THE TRANS TO D IF YOU HAVE AN AUTOMATIC, OR INTO FIRST GEAR WITH A MANUAL, AND CONTINUE ON.

I use Standard brand for everything and have been extremely pleased with the accuracy and reliability. ACDelco is the house brand for GM, and they used to be good like Mopar, but they are using China production now and quality has been dropping for the past few years (I buy a lot of GM parts for my old Cadillac, and I stopped buying ACDelco). Delphi also used to be good (and also used to be part of GM) but quality has also been falling--bought a coil and fuel pump from them in the past six months and both are having problems, the coil farts after sitting overnight, and the fuel pump doesn't fit right.
You should also check your heater core. I got that code when I first got my beater and after trying a few things I flushed the core and heads and a bunch of straw came out from the old dried up coolant. It had created an air pocket in the core, and blocked coolant from flowing through the head, so the sensor was only reading temperature of the air and not the coolant.

Yes, replace the thermostat. I suggest you replace the thermostat anytime you replace a water pump.

Question about fuses used in the 1988 to 1996 fuse panel:
What type of fuses are used? ATO (large blade) fuses, or Mini (small blade) fuses?

Edit: ATO fuses are Open, and ATC are Closed. It's the same form factor, but one has a hole to release the smoke if it blows
