Mine has about the same amount of play as yours. I made a thread a while back about it and a lot of people said its normal. I have a Spartan in mine too. Being a 5-speed, if I dont shift perfectly smooth, I can hear/feel it clunk. Next time I change the diff oil, I am going to double check the back lash. I did new gears about 5000 miles ago too.

Thanks. I'm going to put some thicker oil in it, put a Lube Locker on it, and call it a day. Thankfully there is a differential shop within walking distance from work. Now if I can only time my diff going out just as I'm going by it on the way to work!

I checked the bolts on the flex plate. All tight. Want to get an idea of how many hours of actual assembly time I will have to put in once get all the parts together to build my stroker engine. Anyone who has experience building these have a ballpark number for me?

In a shop environment with all the right tools and air tools this would be a two day job without any hangups but not counting the time it takes the machine shop to to do their work if you are having it bored, decked, line checked and new cam bearings installed as should be...

Hmm.bummer thought that was it.. Anyways as for how long it will take. Is this after the building of the stroker then putting in the motor? If so A day or two, up to three years. It all depends on your skill and tools. If a shop is doing it.. about two working days to install a motor. Some will do it in one, but that is a rush job, Ive seen it done, but it was a slap together and kinda messy after they were done

It might still be the tranny. While I was under there the noise did seem like it was coming from somewhere suspiciously close to where the where the bell housing mates to the engine. Im gonna take it to a tranny shop just up the road and Im sure they will be able to tell me right away where its coming from.
Either way thanks for the info. I do want to put a stroker in my xj either now or in the future.

I get your point and it makes sense... Depends on how fast you need it. But when you do it for a living this is the only way you can make a dime. Flag it for 4 days and get it done in two. I can separate the trans from the engine and change out whole big rig clutch packs with air and the right tools by myself in 6 hours in and out the door. Retail shops quote a flat three days for that job. Thieves... lol

Just so you know... I have never charged my customers more time than it actually took to do the job... "Flag to flag" is theft in my opinion.

I can see that happening somewhere but not here..Just about Everyone in Juneau grew up together. I can go to the dealership and see ppl I went to elementary school with. Thats how it is all over town, Im waving at ppl all day...lol. So if someone told me 4 days and did it in two..The news would get out real fast and ppl would tag that place as rip off.

You must understand Juneau has no roads in or out so its like a island in a way..
This town has the AK spirit and small town feel. We tend to help others out more here, we are like a big family.. Juneau sticks together.

I guess it comes down to how your relationship is with a shop and the techs. Ive had guys move cars out of bays for me to get my rig done.

Thanks for your input.. I returned the Spectra tank because it was the wrong size. Will probably order a new one but the right size (20 gallon). The edges of the tank are razor sharp. That part of the tank was not designed properly.

It shouldn't. It's just a matter of pulling the cover, cleaning the gears off real well, putting some setup paint on front and back of some of the ring gear teeth, then checking accel and decel lash according to the pattern left on the teeth.

Yes. Air can wind up anywhere in the system any time any component on the system is "opened".

Okay so my 91 limited the power seats stopped working I've done my home work all the fuses are good as well as the circuit breaker to I've narrowed it down to the connection that splits power to the seats. What I'm looking for is positive identification on where the harness runs under the carpet and splits at as I want to repair the oe harness I know it's around the trans tunnel But I'm trying to fix it with out having to pull seats and carpet. I've already got the console out of the way any pictures from guys that have already pulled their carpet would be awesome

Default Possible to crank with bad NSS?

Been chasing a hard starting problem for months. Have eliminated many possible causes. Usually takes 5-15 tries to start, cranking but not starting, hot or cold, although hot usually starts faster. Recently noticed that it sometimes starts in fewer tries from Neutral, and that sometimes it will not crank in Park but will in N, or vice versa. My understanding has been that it shouldn’t even crank if the NSS is bad, but this behavior makes me wonder. Tried to see what would happen if I bypassed the NSS as described in multiple threads, but either it’s not the NSS or I never found the right connector/pins to jump as I never got to a place of a quick start. 96 xj 4.0 auto. Also wondering if the trouble is a bad ignition switch and/or key cylinder.... there’s a lot of play there, and the car was stolen six months ago (presumably with a screwdriver start), but don’t know how to test for this. Trying different pressures, angles etc when turning key doesn’t seem to make much difference.
