My understanding has been that it shouldn’t even crank if the NSS is bad, but this behavior makes me wonder. Tried to see what would happen if I bypassed the NSS as described in multiple threads, but either it’s not the NSS or I never found the right connector/pins to jump as I never got to a place of a quick start. 96 xj 4.0 auto. Also wondering if the trouble is a bad ignition switch and/or key cylinder.... there’s a lot of play there, and the car was stolen six months ago (presumably with a screwdriver start), but don’t know how to test for this. Trying different pressures, angles etc when turning key doesn’t seem to make much difference.
Have you tried a screwdriver? If it had a screw driver start at some point in its life. Im sure alot of stuff is messed up in the cylinder.. I would replace it.

Thanks! You think the cylinder, the ignition switch or both?

So, I have to replace the engine in my 2000 xj and I Just found an ATK remanufactured engine with 600 miles on it for $800. Its out of a 2000 grand cherokee, it should be a direct swap right?

XJ Cherokee and ZJ Grand Cherokee 4.0L engine blocks interchange.

2000+ TJ Wrangler and WJ Grand Cherokee 4.0L engine blocks interchange.

XJ/ZJ blocks, and the 2000+ TJ/WJ blocks do not interchange without significant modifications. (1991 to 1995 YJ and 1997-1999 4.0L TJ Wrangler blocks will interchange in XJ/ZJ and visa-versa).

TJ/WJ 4.0L Engine blocks underwent clean sheet design changes effective in the 1999 WJ Grand and 2000 TJ Wrangler. These blocks are not interchangeable with XJ/ZJ engine blocks. The reason is motor mount bolt holes and belt driven accessory mounting bolt holes are in different locations, or not present at all, TJ/WJ vs. XJ/ZJ.

XJ: "Regular" (not Grand) Cherokees 84-01
ZJ: Grand Cherokee 93-98 (Gen1)
WJ: Grand Cherokee 99-04 (Gen2)
YJ: Wrangler 87-95 (Gen1)
TJ: Wrangler 97-06 (Gen2)

You must understand Juneau has no roads in or out so its like a island in a way..
This town has the AK spirit and small town feel. We tend to help others out more here, we are like a big family.. Juneau sticks together.

I guess it comes down to how your relationship is with a shop and the techs. Ive had guys move cars out of bays for me to get my rig done.
I grew up in a small town too. Word travels pretty fast when you start ripping folks off. lol

Default 1991 speed sensor issues

I tried doing a search as well as an advanced search and could not get any specific threads to materialize. Not sure if it is because I am using Safari or what. I need to get information on 1991 Cherokee 4.0L speed sensor and related parts. I own the original dealer shop manuals and I can not even find any information in them. The Jeep dealer wants to give me a speed sensor that does not look anything like the original.

So I've got my 96 4.0L (181k) on the stand and I'm going through and re-doing all the seals and gaskets—I got the Fel-Pro kits for a sweet closeout deal on RockAuto.

I read in an older tech thread on this forum that advises against changing/messing-at-all-with the oil pump gasket. The last 4.0 I worked on, I replaced it, and because I had purchased a new pump also, the old gasket had to come out anyway. However this time around, I'm leaving the original pump in.

Do the cons really outweigh the pros for replacing the pump gasket?

All my nervous ticks are going off because there will be gaskets I'm not using :S

Thanks

I can only tell you I've never had an oil pump gasket go bad on any engine I've had.
