It requires complete disassembly of the transmission to get to the output shaft. You're better off getting a correctly splined transmission, or a transfer case that has a 23 spline input. Sounds strange to me, iirc they changed spline counts in 92. I put a 92 transfer case behind my 2000 aw4 just fine.

Couldn't you just replace the slip yoke with a 21 spline?

Hey guys, doing my valve cover gasket today and got a couple quick questions.
1. I got the cork Fel-Pro gasket, I know I should've got rubber oh well. Is there anything I need to use on the gasket since its cork? Light coating of grease? There was some RTV like stuff on top of the old gasket.
2. If I paint the valve cover does it need to be high temp paint?
3. What's the best way to clean up the mating surfaces?

Is that pretty dirty or is that normal?

XJ Ask the Question Thread-forumrunner_20140426_141057.jpg

And is that pretty normal for the valve cover? Its kind of feels like its charred.
Thanks for the help guys, and sorry for the stupid questions.

1. Return the cork gasket and get the good one.
2. High temp paint for sure.
3. Gasket scraper or razor blade.

Well crap. No one around me carries the rubber gasket. So I can't use the cork one at all? What problems do they have?

If you live that far out in the boon docks that no one carries the Felpro blue gasket (which any auto parts store worth their salt does), how are to going to get a sealant for the cork gasket?

Anyway, if you're stuck using cork, I suggest you use a product called Permatex High Tack Spray-A-Gasket Sealant. It has worked well for me over the years, on parper, cardstock, and cork gaskets. Apply two coats of the stuff on the gasket, allow the sealant to get tacky, then place the gasket on the head, followed by the valve cover (gently placed on the gasket).

Do not over torque the cover bolts.

Its not that they don't carry them, its just that the ones they have in stock are the ones for 96+ otherwise I would've picked up the rubber one. It looks like I'll just have to order is from Amazon or RockAuto. On a side note: I attempted to fit the cork gasket on there for a little practice, needless to say it was impossible. I removed the cables and moved them out of the way but I had bad problems with the cover hitting on a bundle of wires at the back of the engine bay and the lower thermostat hose.

Do you still recommend the spray tac for the rubber gasket?
Anyone know the name of this part? The upper thermostat hose attaches to it. Where can I get it?

That is the heater control valve. Eliminate it by using a straight piece of pipe/fitting. Plug the vacuum line. Continue on.........

The part appears to be the heater control valve, they are known for breaking easily due to the plastic design.

No spray tac for the rubber, clean surfaces and bolt it down.

There is probably a very simple explanation for this but, it looks like I have a mini radiator in front of my big radiator. It's not as small as a tranny cooler so I don't think it's that. I would explain it as a full length radiator in front of the main one just that it is about a third of the thickness. I can try to upload a pic later if you guys need that.
Thanks
