If so, and it's a Rich Porter (RPT) distributor, it may never time in properly. I bought one of these off Ebay and I could not get it timed in. Found the drive gear was installed wrong. Had to send the POS back.

Other rebuilt or new disributors may have the same problem with the drive gear indexing.

There's absolutely no reason to cut, or shave, a fork off to get the distributor to time in. Get a different distributor.
No, I pulled mine to change the gasket cuz I thought it was leaking oil. Thought i put the dist. Back in in the correct spot but I'm like a tooth or two off. It's got a rough start now and idles like crap in N or P. gonna try to set it correctly tomorrow myself. I kinda feel like the shop I went to was just trying to do a quick fix since they said it took them half a day once to do the same thing on another jeep. Ended up finding the oil leak though. It's leaking from the hex bolt that the oil sending unit screws into.

Because it's a heap of crap 30RH. lol

Does it have fluid in it?

I'm an engine guy, not a transmission guy so I would need an in depth walk through if anyone has ever done this before.
Output shaft of the transmission is no big deal. Change the input gear on your transfer case or just replace the transfer case.

Yea. Actually surprised the fluid looks brand new still but holy crap I forgot it had the 30RH. I kept questioning why it went with only 183k on th clock. I heard the Po use to drive on the beach with it

^This is harder on the vehicle and produces more heat than most people realize. Results in vehicle fires at least once per season here in the nasty stuff.

I ordered mine from www.stealthauto.com for my Camaro. It's a BMW site, so you need to figure out what the bulb type is without their application finder. I think they're 194 bulbs, but I don't have one to check.

Default XJ Cooling System

What model year did the XJ switch from a closed cooling system to an open system?

'91 should have open cooling. I've heard rumors of closed systems in early '91s, but I've never seen one.

Strong coolant smell with the heat turned on, but dry floors. No leaks. Where should I look?

Heater core

For funzies place a piece of paper (towel) over a heat vent and blast the heat. See if it smells like coolant.
