There is a wheelbase difference. Different frame, too, so you can't swap beds between lengths. Also different bedsides: The fuel door on longbeds is very close to the fender (which is probably rusted), whereas the fuel door on a shortbed is nearly centered toward the cab. Also, a company sells short bedside skins for ~$200ea. Good luck finding them for a longbed.
The biggest benefit, and the reason I bought longbed:

Also consider:
Auto vs Manual
If auto, column or floor shift. Column is hard to find parts for. I know...
'86 Chevy V6 and crap trans
'87-90 Renix
'91-92 H.O.
'92 is very rare: last year; limited production.
'88 had an Olympic Edition appearance package
Pioneer trim level has full skids
Eliminator is 2WD
Also, '86 was longbed only. If you see an '86 shortbed for sale, they don't know what they have.

I had no idea there was that big a difference between the long bed and short bed. Good to know. I will probably get one early next year.
I wanted a long bed but I'll take whatever has the least rust on it.
All I know is I want one.

Happy to help. I didn't know anything until after I bought mine. If you're using it just for offroading, I'd say find a cheap one with a rusted out bed, and replace it with a flatbed. The frame rails in the back (rear boxed frame; front unibody) are wider than an XJ's unibody rails, so tires rub. I rub my 235/75s driving on the street.
It's actually worse than you can see, but this shows my point:

Aftermarket wheels are in my future.

I have a 1997 Jeep Cherokee Sport with just a tape deck. Insted of just using the converter for the tape deck I am wanting to upgrade to at least a CD player. I am wondering if a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee and my Jeep share the same wiring harness for the stereo.
Also I am kicking around the idea of just getting is AUX cable and, I would have to pull the stereo out, looking to see if I could just go that route to use an MP3 device.
