Ive got a bearing noise somewhere in back I am hoping to get some ideas on.
Here are the symptoms

1- Its most noticeable at the 35-40 mph range but definitely doesn't go away by going faster. I think the road noise at higher speeds start drowning it out.

2- If I let off the gas and coast it gets pretty quiet.

3- If I turn right it gets worse.

4- If I turn left it almost entirely goes away.

Do you think is it a wheel bearing, carrier bearing, or a spindle bearing? I hope its not the spindle because thats the one I dont feel confident I can do myself.

[QUOTE=salad;1450755]It can crack in a few places, obviously near welds... most seem to be on the pipe from cyls 3-6 where they meet the collector to the flange. I had a crack and actually a hole in mine. As a result the raw exhaust causes the smell and fresh air gets into the exhaust system, fooling the O2 sensor and the ECU into thinking that it's running lean and dump more fuel in.[/QUOTE

Thanks for the help ,i did check on the ac coming on while the defrost is on ,and you were right, so im leaving that off ,i checked for cracks in the exaust and didnt find any...i also checked on the 02 sensors and they looked brand new,I mean really new, is therea difference between the top and bottom sensors? Could the previous owner have put them in backwards...I just bought this thing andI knowi should be getting more then 9 or 10 miles per gallon ...... Any more ideas?

Default Shifting Instructions

I just bought a 99 Cherokee Sport, with the NP231 TCase. It did not come with an owners manual and it has been 15 years since I owned a Jeep. I can't remember what the procedure for shifting the NP231 TCase. I know I can go into 4H at certain speeds but what is the correct procedure for shifting into 4L?

I have an owners manual ordered but it won't be here for a few days and I plan to go out tomorrow.

I did a search of the forum and read hundreds of posts but couldn't find the instructions.

Your help is appreciated.

Default What wires are these?

Hi everyone. I wonder if you guys could help me identify some hacked wires in my engine bay. I haven't been able to find much wiring information for it. The Cherokee is an '89 Pioneer with a 4.0, 5-speed manual, and 4x4.

The hacked wires are located in the harness behind the driver's side headlight and there are two sets, both leaving the harness within an inch of each other. Unfortunately, I don't have a camera right now.

One set is one black wire, and one red wire with a white stripe. The other set is one yellow wire, and one grey wire with a black stripe.

Leaving the harness from very near these sets of wires is an orange and grey rectangle, and I have no clue what that is, either.

I'm pretty sure that one of the sets of wires should be going to the sensor on the electric fan.

I'm sorry, I know this is a lot to take in lol. Thank you for any help you can give, I very much appreciate it.

In my 2000, automatic trans, I really only shift into 4-low when completely stopped, and in neutral. 4-high, I'll shift into at very low speeds, only. Early last winter, I blew the original np231, had Aamco replace it for me.. and that is the advice they gave me. 4-low won't let your trans shift past second gear, and it's really meant for getting the most torque on all four wheels.

Bought a V8 ZJ tie rod, but one of the ends has no bushing. Can I replace the bushing or am I better off replacing the TRE? Either way, anyone have a cheap source?

I am having what appears to be an over heating auto box, as only when in 4 low(sand) or towing, the engine cuts out for different times depending on the ambient temp and wind etc, then it starts and off again???

Anyone experienced this, its very frustrating indeed and embarrassing when with other makes of 4x4??

Autozone.. really, very affordable on this part.. less than $75 for both ends and the adjusting sleeve, all with a lifetime warranty.

bushing? You mean the dust boot? No worries man, just clean up the end, pump some grease in to force any dirt out, and put new boots on. I did this with my steering - worked great

I used these:

Quick question, my xj isn't getting to full operating temperature. First suspect should be a thermostat that's stuck open? Anyway to test To see if its bad? I've never changed a thermostat before.

the only way to test it is to take it out and stick it in some boiling water

And at that point you might as well stick a new one in. If the old one tests good you can always stash it for a trail spare.
