Exclamation Preparing for a possible radiator problem

Long story short, I ran my 2001 XJ harder than I should have in 90 degree weather. Temp stayed at 200 for the 1st 30-40 minutes, then started getting up to around 220-230. At 50 minutes my CHECK GAUGES light came on after I had slowed and pulled into the airport storage facility. It overheated, I turned it off and went into the office for 5 minutes. It had alot of water/coolant underneath it when I came out, but it started right up and I was able to drive it into the storage unit. There was no time to look for the source of the leaked fluids. Now I'm afraid of what I will come back to when I go back to Baja and try to drive it away from the airport. Does this sound like trouble waiting in the form of burst hoses or cracked block or anything that will prevent me from driving it when I go back? or is it likely it just overheated and all the fluid came from the overflow valve or something non-critical? Thanks

No way to know until you find the source. Could be anything from an overfilled system to a freeze plug, to a blown radiator, to a cracked block. Gotta find where it's leaking from.

Can you get more detailed info from the mechanic and the reasons for his diagnoses? Did he show you what the issue is?
If the shifter bezel looks like this picture than it's 231 transfer case. If you have 'Part Time' and 'Full Time' than it's 242.
Also, on rear of TC is a disk with the model number stamped into it.

Thank you! I have a 231 it would appear. I actually received another call from my mechanic last night and he said before pulling off the t-case he decided to take it for a test drive. He said he didn't hear what he would usually hear when it's a t-case issue. He thinks it may just be the exhaust rattling. Lets hope that's the case. It was late in the day and I guess he was pretty busy all day, so I'll hear back today. Fingers crossed.

If it does end up being the t-case, is this something that is fairly easy to rebuild? I have limited knowledge but seem to be able to fix things on the XJ that are bolt-on jobs with step by step directions.

Lastly, if I do need to rebuild the t-case. Is there anything that you would recommend I upgrade while I am at it?

Thanks for the help!

Default Transfer Case seals

So I got the call back from my mechanic. Apparently the transfer case chain is OK, but the transfer case is leaking fluid. So, what he suggested is to replace the gasket and all of the seals. He said it would be about a $400 job if I were to have his transmission guy do it. I have very limited knowledge for car repair. Is this something that you would recommend I have done at the shop?

Wouldn't recommend doing that at a shop. About $300 of that is labor. Check out some videos on YouTube of how to rebuild an NP231. You'll spend about $50 in tools for the various snap ring pliers, assuming you have a socket set already, a few bucks on seals and a tube of RTV. I'm sure there are some writeups on here too. A lot of content you'll find in "installing an SYE" type videos.

Had a question about wire harnesses.. I got an overhead console for my 96 sport. After doing some how to install research I found that the connectors for the harness should be buried somewhere in the passenger kick panel.. Haven't had time to install yet.. But was just curious as to weather all other options from other xj models were plug and play as well? For example: power doors, seats, windows, mirrors, locks, rear speaker bar etc. and speaking of rear speakers if the model didn't come with the speaker bar are the speakers in the lift gate? If It did come with speaker bar would the harness still be there?

Yeah. Don't screw it up!! LOL.

Note and mark the position of everything before pulling the dizzy out. Notice the rotor rotates one direction as you lift out the dizzy. Note how far so you know where to begin when reinstalling.

Based strictly off of what you have posted, not that shop! Arbitrarily says it needs replaced without testing/checking anything first??? "Thinks it might be the exhaust rattling"??? When you're paying professional wages you don't need arbitrary decisions and guesses that cost you money and may or may not fix your problems!
If this isn't something you feel comfortable tackling yourself, check out another shop/mechanic first.

I got a leaky np242 and I was looking at just exactly what you're looking at...
eff takin it to a shop, every mechanic to ever touch my jeep has disappointed me, or over charged, or forgot to do something
do it your self, be methodical and scientific, and consider buying a t-case at a pick'n'pull
incase you really mess up something

I think my alternator is going out, Had to get it jump started at the shop after putting on the new wheels /tires. Noticed the gauge reading only around 9-10 on my way home. Going to check it out today.
Anyways while cruising the forum in the wee hours last night, I got to wondering if I had the stock 90 amp one or the upgraded higher amp one. Took a look at my build sheet and it's not listed! Unless it's buried in this code: "ADH Heavy Duty Electrical Group"?

Also I noticed "RCGP 6 Speakers". I've got two in the doors and two in the hatch - where are/were my extra 2? No speaker bar, and it does not appear that there ever was one.

I picked up a set of Craftsman multi-direction snap ring pliers at Sears a couple weeks ago that came with all the various interchangeable tips. Got it on sale for $18. Love it, however, I only needed to remove one type of ring from my Harley's footrests. May be annoying if you're doing a job where you gotta keep swapping tips for various snap rings.
