Not sure of my mpg, but I feeled it up on tuesday and I am at less then half a tank now. I drove some in town: getting some people unstuck and driving a few people around. exhaust smells . . . and I noticed today that I lost power or pickup at about 40 mph.

Shifting like this?

Here's how the factory suggests you shift the transfer case and I've been doing this since these things were new and I worked at the dealership. Quoted from the owner's manual.

"To engage, shift the transfer case lever from 2H to 4H while the vehicle is moving at any legal speed". I let off the gas, throw the lever, and then tap the gas and let off.

4L position: " To engage, slow the vehicle to 2-3 MPH , shift the transmission to Neutral, then shift the transfer lever to the right and pull firmly rearward to 4L".

Well I am going to ask a dealer about it. Then go to a JY and hopefully pull the bracket needed.

You should add to shift out of 4L: trans in N vehicle stopped, I usually pop it right back into 2H, then to D and continue on. If I take it out of 4L on the move it gets the grind.

2-3mph is suggested. No faster than 5mph, but it sometimes won't line up and shift when stopped.

Yeah, probably should. I do the same thing.

How's this?

Here's how the factory suggests you shift the transfer case and I've been doing this since these things were new and I worked at the dealership. Quoted from the owner's manual. The suggestions in ITALICS are mine.

To shift out of 4L, shift the transmission into neutral with the vehicle stopped, shift the transfer case lever to 2H, then to D if you have an automatic, or into first gear with a manual, and continue on.

Yes sir. While doing 10mph I let off the gas, shifted to 4hi. There is a vac line cracked so I know the front axle will not engage. I then slowed down to barely rolling. Pulled the Tcase shifter to "N". It disengaged everything. I then popped it into 4low. Gave it a few taps of gas and nothing, no high rpms or lower gear ratio.

I then drove it with 4low engaged up to 20mph as if it was in 4hi.

I was trying to see if the Tcase would go into 4low. I know the front was not engaging due to the vac leak. But it is not going into 4 low. The shifter was very stiff too, had to give it a pretty hard tug to pull back and shift around.

If you can't move with the shifter in 4L at all, the linkage is probably out of adjustment. This is what the FSM says to do:

SHIFT LINKAGE ADJUSTMENT
(1) Shift transfer case into 4L position. (make sure your shifter is fully in the 4L position)
(2) Raise vehicle.
(3) Loosen lock bolt on adjusting trunnion (Fig.
87).
(4) Be sure linkage rod slides freely in trunnion.
Clean rod and apply spray lube if necessary.
(5) Verify that transfer case range lever is fully
engaged in 4L position. (you can do this under the vehicle at the transfer case)
(6) Tighten adjusting trunnion lock bolt.
(7) Lower vehicle
