damn. the car definitely is pretty bad. Jeep barely looks like it hit anything at all.

Truck. That's how your XJ is registered. My XJ and YJ are titled as 'SU' for SUV, and my MJ is TK.

Hard to say. What is your backslash? Did you spin only only one wheel and observe the spider gears? Any damage on spider gears, bearings? Does the pinion moves in and out or up and down? You will have to be more specific. It all has to be tight and quiet when rotating. You could also put some grease on the gears and check the contact pattern. By rotating the pinion gear with a little friction on the ring gear. Check the pattern whe the grease is squished out where the gears make contact. It has to be perfect.

If it clicks when spinning only one wheel, you found your problem. Remove the spider gears and I bet you will find one or more of the spacers are warned/squished. Depending what ratio you have, you should be able to remove the spider gears without removing the whole carrier.

Just don't negate the possibility of the clicking sound being one of the UV joints..... Check those first. If they are tight, soak them with WD40. If it leaks out rusty from any of the bearing cups, they need to be replaced.

Most times, I've found the metal spacer (bottom washers looking things on the picture) between the spider gears and the carrier to be distorted/damaged by pressure and/or friction. If you don't see obvious damage on the gears they should be good. When you pull them out, you should be able to tell if they are warned or damaged. I personally don't replace them unless I see obvious damage on them since they are only in the front.

They are very easy to replace. Its just a messy job. Make sure you have the proper amount of new oil before you start so you can re-fill the case.
