There's a set bolt and a bolt that you loosen and the idler releases tension.

I can swap a belt out in 5 minutes on a late model.

Nothing to it.
Yeah because late models.

Also noticed when it doesn't stall out the lights dim for a while after I've backed up.

Root causes? Troubleshoot tips? I'm lost
Make sure your engine to trans bolts are there and tight. There have been instances where they weren't and the engine would move when in reverse and the CPS signal would be interrupted.

Can a bad alignment (too much toe in/out) singlehandedly cause death wobble?

I didn't have it before, then I reset my alignment to what I thought was perfect. Then when heading out on vacation last week I hit a series of holes going 70 and got quite a wake up shaking lol.

I battled it the whole way down there, and the whole way back. Made the drive down right unnerving.

I might call you up when I'm back in town. I have driven my Jeep once in the past two weeks. Brake light is out too... bought an extra one and it's sitting in the glove box. I'm pretty sure I'm gonna get plenty of weird looks changing the belt/brake light in the dorm parking lot.

Ok has anyone had any recalls done. I see a link on this forum and looked at it but will they actually take them in, or are our XJ's too old?? I have never brought a vehicle in for a recall. Sorry if it is a stupid question..

Depends on the recall, some of them are lifetime and some are time-limited. I believe certain years have a catalytic converter recall that appears to not expire.

Find your local dealership and give them a shout

I was heading home last night and after a little traffic on i5 I went to speed up and it would not leave 3rd gear so I was revving out to 3500rpm so I got off and checked around my jeep, never shut it off and found nothing got back on the freeway and everything was fine
Should I be looking at the solenoids or what else?

Fluid level and condition?

Have you ever changed the fluid?

TPS might be in play here, too.

Another area to look at is the grounds at the dipstick tube stud since your is an 89. Also the trans plugs could be corroded inside.

#1 and #10 in the pink link below.

Is there a rule of thumb on belt tension on a 2000 4.0 XJ? I do not have access to a special time to measure. I recently replaced the alternator and just guessed at the tension. Replaced the belt too while i was in there.
