I really don't know how to test it without cracking open a manual.

What's the ideal gear size to retain speed and power on 31's?

look at the sidewalls of the tires, or on the inside of the drivers side door where it has the build date, vin etc.

Anyone have a good link to a general guide to installing a lift kit? Anything with a lot of pictures? I'm new to this, but have decided to man up and just give it a try on my rusted heep. I tried a search but a million threads popped up. Thanks in advance.

It's really a learn as you go thing. Look to threads for some general ideas but once you start anything can happen. I just looked to instructions that came with my lift kit

Well we can't really give you an answer then...wherever the Jeep is have them check what size. Should be very easy to find on the sidewall

"Learn as you go" that's funny I was actually just thinking of making that the title to my build thread before you posted. Anyway I printed out some rough country instructions from their website and will be using it as a general guide to doing my long arms. Thanks though I have been checking out the threads just to get some idea of how it goes. Got me a few good buddies with some beers...wish me luck...

Not if you want to go up to 33's or 35's ever.
