Hi guys,
New member and relatively new jeep owner. I bought my first jeep earlier this year---a '99 jeep cherokee sport, straight 6 engine, etc.
This summer my jeep started overheating. Then it got to the point where rusty liquid was spewing out of the coolant resovoir and smoke from the engine as well. At first overheating was far between, but then it was almost whenever i drove, the needle on the thermostat would jump up and i'd have the same problem.
I finally had it looked at at Adams Jeep. They said they ran pressure tests, etc, and that i needed new radiator (it was cracked) and a new electric cooling fan. i asked them if there was absolutely anything else wrong with it and they said no. My brother and i went to Salvos to get parts, but the clerk took one look at the service papers (which listed "symptoms") and he said he would bet anything it was a warped motor head because he had seen it so many times before.
Now i dont know which to believe or what to do, because i dont want to the wrong thing and lose $$$. Adams wanted close to 800$ which was why we were going to work on it ourselves.
Thoughts?!
Thanks!!

If the radiator is cracked and the electric fan is shot, they will need to be replaced regardless. As for the head being warped, the only way to find out is to pull it (requiring a head gasket gasket set to put back on). Might I suggest doing the radiator and fan, doing a good coolant flush (to get rid of the mud that's being used as coolant currently), and then running it to see if there are any other problems. Yes, the head can warp, but the only real way to tell is to pull it and check...
Oh, and change the oil. If the engines been overheated, the oil may have cooked as well. That will also let you see if coolant has gotten into the oil. If it has, the head gasket puked, the head IS warped, or you have a crack somewhere. With any of those 3, the head is gonna come off...

Hi there,
Bought my first Jeep a few days ago, 85 Cherokee for a whopping $450. Kid said it didn't run well. Perfect for me, I need cheap 4x4 transportation for the winter. Replaced the alternator with a rebuilt from Napa, new belt and little pigtail connector. Didn't replace the battery as it was new in July 2010. Starts and runs just fine now, been driving it back and forth to work.
When the headlights are on or the blower fan on high, it seems to draw so much power that the in dash volt meter goes from 13 down to the top of the red range (9 maybe?) when the Jeep is at an idle. Dash lights dim, turn signals don't blink. Give it some gas, needle jumps back to 13, lights are bright, signals blink at a normal rate. There is a giant fuel gage where the tach should be so I have no idea RPM wise where it idles at. It's a smooth idle.
Where do I start to troubleshoot this? I'm not a mechanic by any means, but if given some direction, I can usually figure things out. Or screw it up to the point my brother takes pity on me and fixes it.
Any help is appreciated; I really don't want to pay some shop more than the Jeep cost to fix something that hopefully I can remedy on my own.

X2. I agree. Newbs and others need a place to get answers without starting a bunch of random threads.
Maybe it wasn't glued back in the exact same/correct spot. The air gap is crucial on the CPS. You may end up replacing it.
You can also check the connector to verify it's clean and making a good connection.

Ohhhhh, it's got bigger problems now I think than the colour of the wheels! :angry7:
Huge amount of oil and water blowing out of the PCV and other non airtight valvecover fittings.
The amount accumulated in the picture was after only two days total of 20 miles (30 kms).
......and I am detecting water in the oil...........it could be condensation? :dontknow:
Cool humid weather and short trips.
Ok, thanks. I wasn't sure if adams completely lied, that seemed to be the clerks thinking. The fan turns on when the car is on. And I guess if there was a crack in the radiator there would be leaking like a mist from it? The only place it leaks from is resovoir I think. But I will probly take apart etc anyway

Hello, I just bought an 86 jeep cherokee and need help with replacing the ignition cylinder, if anybody has any links to diagrams to help i would greatly appreciate it.
I put a glass pack on mine sounds alright it really frees it up. it will scream i like it. Mine comes out right in front of the axle using the stock mount ther. Also put hotter coil .050 gap plugs an MAP adjuster an it will scream. Some mufflers are just not loud enough thou. Screw MPG lol

Buddy was changing his oil on his 94 XJ when accidentaly touched filter wrench to starter wire. It shot sparks and now no lights or anything and will not crank. Checked all the fuses I know to check. Any ideas?
