Hello, and thank you for taking to time to read my post...I have a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee that I have had for a few months the body has 200000 miles on it, but there was a reman motor put in, but I am not sure how many miles are on the reman I would have to look through the paper work to see. When I first bought it it seems to run just fine no hesitations or anything, but a few days after that I took a trip into town came back shut off the truck a couple hours later I went to start it and it just turned over...Ill try and give you the history and details to try and narrow down what may be wrong. So I got it into the garage and started checking the obvious stuff, what I found was that there was no spark, so I bought a used computer and a used engine harness for cheap but in good working order...after a while of trying to trouble shoot, I took it to my mechanic and he found that the crank shaft position sensor was bad, when he put that in he said he was able to get spark, but when he tried to start it, it would run but it sounded like it was miss firing or out of time. He checked to see if it had jumped timing, it hadent. So now he is leaning toward a flex plate that has shifted?? does this make sense, or would it be more of a sensor problem...? What I would like to know is should I cut my losses with this guy and find someone else to help with this issue? I would really like to pay him and get it back to the house and fix the issue myself if anyone can assist me with this issue. Again thank you for your time and advise.
Anybody know the distance between the Lca's? I'm starting my front leaf spring swap soon and need to figure this one out, unfortunately my Lca mounts were hacked off by the previous owner for who knows why.

Hi there,
Bought my first Jeep a few days ago, 85 Cherokee for a whopping $450. Kid said it didn't run well. Perfect for me, I need cheap 4x4 transportation for the winter. Replaced the alternator with a rebuilt from Napa, new belt and little pigtail connector. Didn't replace the battery as it was new in July 2010. Starts and runs just fine now, been driving it back and forth to work.
When the headlights are on or the blower fan on high, it seems to draw so much power that the in dash volt meter goes from 13 down to the top of the red range (9 maybe?) when the Jeep is at an idle. Dash lights dim, turn signals don't blink. Give it some gas, needle jumps back to 13, lights are bright, signals blink at a normal rate. There is a giant fuel gage where the tach should be so I have no idea RPM wise where it idles at. It's a smooth idle.
Where do I start to troubleshoot this? I'm not a mechanic by any means, but if given some direction, I can usually figure things out. Or screw it up to the point my brother takes pity on me and fixes it.
Any help is appreciated; I really don't want to pay some shop more than the Jeep cost to fix something that hopefully I can remedy on my own.

Just because it was new in July doesn't mean it didn't go bad - especially if it wasn't charging properly.
I would also check the ground on the side of the battery, and also the one behind the valve cover on the firewall. Clean up both contacts really well and replace the wires if they look corroded / "green" at all.

Spring compressors can be very dangerous, avoid if at all possible!! It's much easier and way safer the way i described.

Hey quick question, I'm getting ready to do a zj tie rod upgrade on my 90 xj, I've done research and the only thing I'm unclear of is should I go with the zj drag link too or not and my tie rod up at the pitman arm is worn, can I replace that with the zj tie rod as well if I keep the xj drag link? Thanks for your time.
