XJ Ask the Question Thread
I have a 93' XJ 4.0 5speed. Stock. The transmission gets really hot under normal driving conditions and within short amount of time. Does not affect driveability, just curious as to why so much heat pours through center console. Do XJ's stock trans have coolers? Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks!
Hi, I have a 87 cherokee pioneer, and i am having trouble finding the correct paint codes for it. I have checked the chassis plate, but I could not find any codes starting with p or q there. Please help

There are actually 3 rubber boots around the shifter: The outer boot is the one you see. It's really just decorative. Below that is one that seals from the body to the shifter lever. It usually falls apart, and causes the trouble you have. Below that is one that seals the shifter lever to the transmission (to prevent water getting into the transmission).
The following is first-hand, from my repair of my '96 - your '93 may or may not be different:
- There was a reason why I couldn't get the proper inner boot - they may no longer be available, I don't remember exactly. I found a website where somebody used a boot from a YJ, so that's what I did. New from dealer, was like 40 bucks if I remember right. I've got the bill at home, I could even get you the part number if you need.
- The outer boot can be pried out from the console. The plastic retainer inside the boot was all broke - be careful, don't break it any worse. I had to pop-rivet some aluminum to mine to hold it together, and I made a retainer plate to hold the back down, once it was all reassembled. You don't need to remove the shifter ****, just leave the outer boot on the shifter lever. Remove the entire center console. Lift it up around the shifter lever and boot - it's a bit tricky, take your time,it fits OK.
- You can now see the inner boot in all it's ripped, torn, deteriorated glory. Remove it.
- The shifter lever is made up of 2 parts, joined in a block thingy. You need to separate the 2 halves, to be able to install the new inner boot. It just pulls apart - though I had to remove my entire shifter lever, and put it in a vice to be able to beat it part. The shifter is held into the transmission by a cap that the shifter pokes through. The cap is like a bayonet fit into the transmission - press it down a bit, you should be able to rotate it counter-clockwise with 2 fingers pressing it down, then it just pops up, and the whole shifter comes out.
- The YJ inner boot is not an exact fit, but it works well enough. Once you have the shifter lever apart, reinstall the lower part back into the transmission. Put the new inner boot over the shifter, and locate it to the best position. You need to drill new mounting holes, they don't line up with the old ones. Use (short) self-tapping screws to mount it.
- Put everything back together. The upper half of the shifter lever just pushes onto the lower half.
- Enjoy your new, quieter, cooler jeep.
I just did a rear brake job on my XJ b/c one of my wheel cylinders busted, and my "BRAKE" light came on. I changed everything out, but my "BRAKE" light is still on, what do I have to do to turn it off. (95 XJ)
I don't know if this helps, but I know the alternators can get a little flaky when they start to go out. Currently, mine is working fine, but a few monts ago it would stop putting out power unless I tapped on it with the engine running, then it would work just fine, and as I said, works fine the last few months. Ill have to replace it, but it'll work for a while.
More to the point, the last one I had go out tought me something about the regluator that might help you. My regulator was going out and the computer was sending 20v to the regulator input, trying to boost output since the alternator was hardly putting anything out and I was running on battery.
I'm wondering if you have a loose wire going to the alternator regulator, or if some wierd thing like the transmission line got shorted to the regulator line or something. I've had all sorts of wierd "can't believe it" wiring issues with my jeeps. Cant' hurt to check, I figure.

I was attempting to clean/fix my instrument cluster and now the gauges do not work properly. All the gauges are off. Is there any way to restore these gauges back to normal or if not when I put in a new cluster will it read my actual miles on the Jeep or will it show whatever miles were on the new cluster? I have a 98 XJ Sport.
Hey I was wondering if you could educate me on difference of a short arm and long arm kit. Im looking to get a rc 6.5 short arm kit, or should i just get the long arm kit instead. Im new and on a budget so there is a price difference in short and long kit.

my 98 cherokee keeps stalling out it will start fine and idle fine but it stalls out after about a block it will start right back up and idle fine it just runs about another block then same thing. Any tips or ideas on whats wrong would be appreciated. thanks
My Jeep was stuck in the mud for about 3 months! It drove fine after but one day I was driving and it was driving fine! When I shut it off. It wouldn't turn back on? We check for spark and there was none! So my buddy towed me to his house and when we got there I decided to try it! It started rite up! Drove fine for about another month! When I came back home shut it off and it was running fine! The next day no spark again! I traced it back to the coil and there is nothing! I don't know if theres power going into the coil but deff no spark coming from it! It did have a long boot on the plug so I put a pieces of metal in it and still no spark! SO IDK what to do? I checked the fuse too! Maybe the CPS but it would run for a second right and still would have spark from the coil right?! IDK any idea! I miss her! Stuck in the mud for 3 month and now this! DAMN
Try the Crankshaft Position Sensor
I have an 89 Cherokee and the fuse panel is shot. I have found another one but I can't figure out how to get the large connector that is on the outside of the firewall loose to pull it through to the inside of the jeep. Is there a trick to releasing this large connector or am I gonna have to cut all those wires and spend days splicing them?! Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
