Again no major issue as its pretty easy to tell when 4wd is actually on. Just wondering if there is some other easy fix for this. My next move will to just put electrical tape over the 4wd indicator lol.

Oh and yeah I would remove the neg bat cable if I could get the dumb thing off. The Previous owner felt it necessary to crank the clamp on so tight that the battery post and clamp might as well be one solid chunk. Planning on cutting it off and replacing it at some point, just have not gotten around to it yet.

Oh... also. What are the most common causes for belt squeak. The belt I have looks fairly new. I don't see any cracks, or anything that looks out of the ordinary. There does not appear to be any grease or oil on it or anything. Would it be an ok idea to take a rag and run some degreaser over the surface of the belt just to be sure it's clean.

Or do they typically stretch out after some use and need adjusted. Never really messed with belts before aside from having them just plain break and needed to replace them.

It pretty much squeals constantly now but it started by only squealing while dry, If a little water got on it it would quit.

thanks for any help.
Ok follow the vacuum line from the vacuum motor on the axle to the light switch and check for leaks. The lamp switch is operated by the vacuum, so if hte light is still on it means that the axle is still engaged, although the TC is in 2wd.

The skids changed with the gas tank change in 97 (from metal to poly). So you want a 97+ skid. I've read and seen where a pre-96 was modified to fit a 97+, but it took some cutting and re-drilling of holes. I know the ZJ skid will fit a 97+, but again you have to redrill the holes to line up.

Thanks for the info Fantic. I think I went about this in the most complicated way possible though. About 20 minutes ago I had a "just try this instead, dummy" moments.

I went out, jacked up the front. Turned the wheels separate from each other in 2wd then switched to 4wd and they didnt turn separately. So yeah, the 4wd is engaging and disengaging just fine. It's just the light that stays on...so no big deal for me lol.

"User CP" at the top of the forum just above the "post reply" button.

Go there and there should be an option to set your avatar.

I just came across this thread today and I have to give my 2 cents worth.

All of us 'old timers' always tell the newbies to search, and yes Stefano I seen that you put that in the first post.

Now who in there right mind would want to read 833 posts (the # of posts in this thread) to find ONE key word from a search? It's so much easier to just post a new question.

Now to my point. If we keep making "general" threads such as this one, nobody will search. They will just keep asking the same question over and over, in the same thread, and those people that do use the search button will get tired of doing so because they dont want to read 100's of posts in the same thread to find there key word.

Agreed. I totally ignore this thread when i search, it's way too general. I'm just bored and decided to skim it tonight. That, and I think i'm only a few posts away from becoming a seasoned member...lol

Let me clarify:
This thread works differently, you don't have to read all the posts to understand something. There is no chronological sequence like in a build thread. User A. asks a valid question and user B. quotes the question and gives the answer (i might add this claification in the first post). End of the game.
It doesn't matter if a question is asked twice on here, although i must say it has still to happen.

The obligatory preliminary operation before posting on this thread is a research in the forum for other threads concerning the issue, if really no answer is found THEN you can ask here.

Common questions such as lifts and tires will be reproached. I have done that already and invite you to do aswell. If you feel that the person asking is a slacker, bash him, but be prepared to show him where the answers are that he claims not to have found, otherwise it is a non constructive criticism.

A secondary purpose of this thread is to avoid people from hijacking others threads with their issues, and as i wrote in the first post, to give a palce where you can talk about tech since it is not allowed in the off topic threads.
You have missed all the diatribe we had in the PW3 thread about this and the Mods promised to definitely close the PW3 thread if we continued to talk tech.
833 posts and 16.000 views tell me that this thread works and is apreciated, infact it has been made sticky.

Edit: i forgot to mention the problem with my PM box (solved thanks to this thread) being literally flooded with questions that A. fill it faster than time and B. the issues and eventual solutions remain unshared.

Answering my own question about serpentine belt squeal. Found a short simple article about belt squeal containing small bits of info that I previously had not considered.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Serpentine belts are a great invention but unfortunately they drive everything on a modern engine which places a lot of load on them. When your belt displays any of the following:
-squeals when accelerating.
-chirps constantly
-squeals constantly
-squeals when wet or moist outside
-squeals when cold
-or any combination of the above.

The belt must be replaced, but wait... If you replace the belt it may stop for a while but then the noise comes back. This is because the old belt was slipping and has polished the pulleys or "glazed" them. So before you replace that noisy belt scrub all of the pulleys well with a scotch brite pad, or a good wire brush to remove the glaze and rough up the surface. Clean them off with brake cleaner afterward. Belts work by friction so if the surface is polished too much the belt will slip. If you have already put on a new belt and it is making noise, -sorry you must buy a new one again. Slipping on the pulleys will glaze a new belt fast which ruins it. Some people say you can apply brake cleaner etc to a new belt to fix it but that may not work well. If it slips it will just mess up your newly cleaned pulleys and you will have to scrub them up all over again. So do the job right and rough up the pulleys AND replace the belt at the same time.

There are a few other things that can cause serpentine belt noise tho so before you replace the belt check the following:
-The bearings in the tensioner and idler pulleys can go bad. To test this put some chalk or whiteout on the edge of those pulleys so it makes a bright "flash" you can see when it rotates. If the chirp is in time with the flash on one of the pulleys most likely you have a bad bearing in that pulley. Sometimes if you have the right tools you can press in a new bearing. Other times you need to get a new assembly. Other accessories can have bad bearings also so you may need to mark and watch them also. WARNING: Never stand in line with a moving belt or fan. If it comes apart etc it could cause severe injury.
-The tensioner can loose it's tension which will cause the belts to slip. If it is easy to move the tensioner then it needs to be replaced and the pulleys cleaned and belt replaced.
-The belt can become delaminated and part of the outer fabric cover can come loose which will "flap" when it hits parts of the engine making a noise. If you hear this tick tick tick noise and it seems to be in time with that printing on the belt then this may be the problem. Always install a serpentine belt so that the cover splice is pushed down by the motion of the belt rather than being peeled upward.
-The belt can crack or delaminate and sections of the inner VVVVV surface may break off and cause mysterious noises. If you see cracks in the inner surface replace the belt.

-Hope this helps!

REMEMBER: NEVER PUT ANY LUBRICANT ON A BELT!!! A lubricant may stop the belt from making noise temporarily but it defeats the purpose of having a belt. You need FRICTION between the belt and pulleys to transfer power. If you lube a belt it changes the frequency of the sound the belt makes to one you can't hear but will not drive the pulleys fast enough and you may end up with a dead battery, dim lights, poor AC, or high engine temps, etc. The slippage and lubricants work together to produce heat in the belt which will destroy the belt rapidly.

I was going to take the front sway bar off my 2000 cherokee to repaint and install new bushings. One of the bolts is striped. Is there a nut inside the frame that this bolt tightens on, or is it a threaded hole?

If it a threaded hole I should beable to retap it or redrill(larger) then tap it.
