Which position was the shifter in each time you checked it?

Park, after slowly cycling through each gear, engine running and at normal operating temp.

Angry 2001 Jeep Cherokee 4x4 Temp Gauge not working

Hi, So I recently bought this XJ. It had a check engine light on. Had a couple mis fire codes. Replaced plugs, all is well there. But one day out of the blue the temp gauge would not register. (It was pegged all the way to the left.) So today I bought a new thermostat and temp sensor. (used old housing). The old temp sensor had exposed wires and they did a ****ty gasket job on the old thermostat. I had to buy a wiring kit for the temp sensor as well. I have now done everything I can think of and the temp gauge will maybe pop up to 110-150 but slowly goes all the way back down pegged left. Am I missing something here? I took off neg battery terminal for awhile thinking maybe something would reset but nothing happened. Also with this did an entire coolant flush. And trust me this baby is getting hot. Oh, and the fans will not come on either. They are dual electric fans that someone installed before me. Please for the love of God help. She's so damn good lookin and I just want to drive her with confidence. Thanks, David
P.S.
I screwed up and posted on someone else's thread haha. Hope I didn't **** anyone off. Sorry!

2001 xj right? What temp range thermostat is it?You need a 195f thermostat. What kind is it, NAPA? and I wouldn't trust the gauge in the dash.. Can you find a IR Infrared Thermometer Gun to use, verify real temp at thermostat housing.

This is a good thermostat

As for the fans.. Unplugging the temp sensor at the thermostat housing should kick the fans on,,if they are working and getting power.

It a Murray.
Just unplugged temp sensor and no fans. Apparently not getting power. There are 2 fuses outside the fuse box that go to the fans. Fuses are good. I don't think they are hooked up to the relay for the cooling fan either. But I need to be able to get some kind of readout on the dash. I can't just drive this thing around blind. It's gonna be my daily. Just installed thermostat and temp sensor tonight. Guess I'm gong to be chasing wires tomorrow... Also I believe that temp sensor and my dash not working have something to do with my a/c not working either. No leaks holds pressure but engages for 2 seconds when you first fire her up. I need that dash read out.

Before the new seal, it was right in the safe zone. Now, it's above max. I know how to check it (level ground, warm engine, engine running, etc.) and I added no fluid after putting in the seal. Is it possible I did something that raised the pressure somehow and is inflating the fluid level reading, or rather that the old seal was somehow making the fluid level read low?
How much of a task was replacing that seal? I'm going to have to get that done soon

I need to get this fixed before next week. I checked the wires and everything looks good. No breaks in the wires and no corrosion. Still not getting power to fans.

Have you tried to jump the fans direct from the batt to see if they run. Maybe they are on a toggle switch from the previous owner.

Well, mine is still leaking, so I’m not one to give advice. But I’m not much of a mechanic, and it wasn’t hard. Be sure to tape up the end caps on the u joint before pulling the driveshaft... I didn’t, and the caps fell off into the dirt and spilled their pin bearings, and I had to put in a new u joint. I bought a gasket pulling tool but it was no help; I was able to get the old one out with a screwdriver. Don’t know why the new one is leaking. I had trouble reinserting the shaft, and finally gave such a hard push that it went in too far, and I’m afraid I stretched out the new seal and that’s why I still have a leak, but I’m not sure. FYI, Haynes says to use jack stands, but my XJ is not lifted and I had plenty of room to do this job without jacking up. Good luck!

Naw man, you're exactly who I want to ask. People who get it right without a hitch leave out little details and things that can go wrong. Thankfully I only have a small leak so I'm not in a rush but it will need to get done eventually.

Stupid question but what temps can I expect under the hood at the perimeter of the engine bay and right near the cowl? Looking to mount a 3D printed part and considering mounting it near the passenger side hood hinge.

Thanks!

You sure you're aiming for the right hole? The bolts on the outter corners are larger than the rest. I think a couple of the studs are larger too.

You should be alright right there. The hottest part is the driver's side corner because that's where the exhaust manifold runs. Best way to tell, let your Jeep idle for a bit after driving home from somewhere (work, grocery store, etc) then put your hand on the hood. Won't be able to keep your hand on the driver's side corner up near the cowl or over the intake for very long. The passenger corner near the hinge though is usually pretty cool.

Any of the crew here running an IRO HD tie rod? I have my money in hand ready to throw it at my computer screen. I just can't figure out if it comes powder coated or not. The description mentions having wrench flats so you don't scratch the powder coating. However, it doesn't definitively state that it comes powder coated.

Was hoping to place an order tonight after dinner. If I don't get an answer from here, I'll just call in the morning and ask.
