So I know I have a 231 and am mostly positive I have the ax5 since I have a 2.5l in my 87 and from what I've read the ax15 1 came out the next year and was used in v6's and v8's not the 4 bangers. So my question is this. Would swapping out to an ax15 be worth the cost and trouble? For right now I live in Southern California so from what I've read the 231 would serve me well and is supposed to be the stronger of the 2. Would there be any benefit of going to the 242? It was mostly opinions and I couldn't find anywhere it said which was better.

AX15 is significantly stronger than the AX5, and it's worthwhile if you offroad it. Do some research to ensure you pull it from a compatible year, though.
NP231 will likely be the better choice for your application. It's a little stronger and has upgrade options available. The 242's advantage it that it offers a Full Time 4WD mode, which is handy for winter conditions or other scenarios where you repeatedly go back and forth between good traction and loose/slick surfaces while driving.
You'd be looking for the 4.0L, which is an inline (I6) engine. No V6s after the first couple years, and no V8s ever in the XJ.

i just had my 2.5l rebuilt so I'm not looking for an engine swap now, but later on I will. Right now it's the tranny and t-case I'm looking at. And I know there's adaptor kits to get an ax15 on there since it doesn't line up perfectly. Is there a reason that part time 4wd wouldn't work the same as full time?
The NP242 has full-time AND part-time 4WD. Full-time mode uses a differential gearset in the transfer case, and is appropriate for wet roads, ice, and partial or packed snow. Part-time 4WD locks the front and rear driveshafts together and can only be used in slippery conditions, you will break stuff using part-time on pavement. It is prone to understeer at speeds for the same reason.
How similar is a 1998 2.5tdi sport to a 1996 4.0l XJ?
I'm looking for a donor vehicle for various parts - looks the same shape as mine- apart from the obvious engine difference, how similar is everything else??

Depends when in '96 and what you're looking for. '96 was a transition year. If you can find '97-99 that would be a for sure.

Sorry what I mean is mine is a 96 XJ ltd and I've seen a tdi same shape. Mine needs a bit of work to put it back on the road - the previous owner used it to tow a small boat anand it looks like he'she's been reversing the trailer into a mariner / the sea as the petrol / lpg tanks are seriously corroded along wt the rear exhaust. I doubt the tank will fit and will buy a new one but I'm worried about the rear axle and wouldn't mind a spare. So would the TDI fit the bill?

1997+ XJs have little in common with the earlier years in terms of parts, especially when you jump engines like that. Suspension, axles, and the transfer case are about it... (Although the input gears would need to be swapped, probably)
Hello, I have a 2000 Cherokee Sport and I've been looking to replace the intermediate shaft. I've found the Borgeson replacement shaft but it always lists the years from 76-86 and then 87-98. The part number I keep coming across through default google searches is 893 but I keep reading articles about how it has splines on the end that connects to the back of the steering box which I also read does not have splines. If anyone can give me any insight or has any experience doing this I'd greatly appreciate it.
I have a 96 Cherokee xj country 4.0l AW4
when I start in 1st from stop. with normal acceleration I hear and feel 3 to 6 or so thumps in a second or two , from under the ebrake lever, sounds like a rubber mallet hitting the transfer / transmission housing.
Had up on lift nothing loose, in drive on lift nothing. added ebreak a bit while on lift to add resistance and nothing unless on ground starting from stop.
when placed in 4x4 , sound and thump decreased to 10% of before.
ant thoughts
thanks
