I wanted to put disk breaks on the rear.
Somone suggested that I just replace it with a dana 44 already rebuilt with disk setup. Although I thought it was a good suggestion, they were unable to direct me to a place to buy one.

Do you think I should just rebuild this 35 that I got? (i.e. just clean up all the rust, change the diff cover maybe, and do the conversion).
I'm not big on going offroad, but I did and do, plan on towing with more than occasionally .

Rust isn't THAT bad for a 28 year old Jeep from the Salt Belt.

That said, I wouldn't put a dime into a Dana 35, unless there was no other option. Look in the local For Sale section here on Cherokee Forum and check your area Craigslist for a use Chrysler 8.25" axle from a 1997 or newer Cherokee. (You could get one out of a junkyard, too, if you wanted.) Then you can do the disc brakes, seals, and bearings while it's out and swap in your new axle. There are a couple of writeups here on doing the work!

Yea, I know how to spell brakes. I was using the speak to text function for the first time.
I guess my tablet chose the wrong homophone. I must remember to proof read more.

So, besides telling me, what everyone else says, that D35s arejunk, do you got any replacement suggestions, for someone like me? Maybe with disks too?

Yea, I always see a few Cherokee's at my local yard. And I seen a write up on the disk conversions on axels and a YouTube video on a D35s (which is why I was contemplating freshening up mine). There's a guy selling the parts to do conversions here in the seller forum. That thread has lots of info for conversions.

So your recommending the Chrysler 8.25 as the best option.?
I started to ask which axle I have, because somone local to me is selling a D44 from an MJ for $125. I know brackets need to be relocated on that one, due to the leaf under situation, but I got a friend that's an awesome welder, and will do small jobs for me , no problem.

yes. Like Salad said, find a 97+ Chrysler 8.25 axle, refresh up the bearings while you have the shafts pulled to do the disc swap. Then when you have a free day, swap the axles

If you want to go all new check out BLACK MAGIC BRAKES. Just did it on mine and it was great!
good for 44's, 35's and 8.25s. But as stated earlier don't bother upgrading a turdy5 unless it's your only option.

I'm sure pulling somthing used of a Junk Yard vehicle would be cheaper than an all new kit, and I have more time than money right now.
But thank you for the suggestion. I will explore it, to see what that would cost.

Ballpark? $150.
Price depends on your location, but they're fairly common

Mine was $90 advertised on a local Jeep forum, I had to drive for it and get the seized drums off.

So if given a choose between a Chrysler 8.25 and a ford 8.8 at the JY, which would be better to pick up?

Well the only other axle for a jeep Cherokee that I found on Craigslist is the Chrysler 8.25 for $40, but it's an hour away.

The description says the axle is for a Jeep Wrangler, Cherokee or Camanche.
I'm thinking it came from a Cherokee.
