...BUT how does one know if the trans is already out and on the ground with NO history 'per-se'? I've been a readin (noggin-pokin) and it looks like the plugs are different, and that may be a way. (gotta wait til he gets home to take pics of what he's got to have owner send me pics of their trans)
I mean, I've been at the 'yards' and have come up on a vehicle that the ______ is already out and just sitting there. I think to myself WOOHOO! Then it's replaced by- Wait a min.. What if it's the wrong part? IS it worth the effort to pull yours and put a questionable one in, only to find out that its' the wrong part..
It looked like it, measured like it, even smelled like it but NOW you have to pull it back out, borrow buddy's truck to take it back and figure out how to get to work for the next _____.
Don't mean to get all dramatic about it, but have been in this situation many times before, and think that theres' GOT TO BE some kind of visual marks, stamps, tags that 'should' designate what the heck it is by a chart or graph..
OK, here's another monkey wrench.. What about the Grand Cherokee 6cyl auto trans and transfer case?
I've scoured through the so called "What junk yard parts will swap" but no one says anything of the Grands?
I would think that it being the same 6cyl engine, it SHOULD BE the same trans and T-case. BUT I'm not reading it..

ZJs are usually in the junkyards because of failed transfer case (NV249) or transmission (42RE), or because they were driven into something.
XJs are usually in the junkyard because they rusted out.

I had the rear axle on jack stands while doing this, in case it matters, but I still had the play when all wheels on the floor, so this isn't normal right? bad bearing? can it be changed with the transfer case still on the jeep? I will use this as an excuse to get an SYE if the TC has to be dropped, but I could save the money right now.
the u-joint is tight, so that's not where the play comes from. diff yoke is also tight.
