I like the idea of replacing the distributor. When I changed the cap and rotor they had a good amount of corrosion on them, even though changing them didn't help. Maybe its corroded inside, looks like there is a black cover on it. I have changed a bunch of SBC distributors, never a 4 liter Jeep.
How do I change the distributor? Is it just put the new one in pointing the same direction as the old one? What years will work?
Its driving me nuts, I am gonna be in the woods in NC in 20 days far from home. I have a good scanner, haven't taken any car of mine or my wifes to a mechanic to have something fixed in 25 years! I don't think mechanics diagnose anything anymore, just start replacing parts.
Thanks, Dan

I recommend a cheaper radio, a name-brand antenna, and a decent aftermarket handset/microphone. I see a lot of mics broken right out if the box, and then people chase their tail on wiring/grounding as they try to guess the problem.

I like Uniden, but Cobra has an excellent history. Can't go wrong with either in my opinion. I use a Uniden 520 in my Wrangler and my J10. I prefer it over the larger models I used to use because they took up a lot of space with functions I never used. Back to multi-quoting again... man I need to get on here more often.
Still showing RockAuto with a sub-30 dollar pricetag. Do yourself a favor and check man. I totally understand where Clown is coming from with buying locally and completely respect that. My feeling is this: Autozone, Advance Auto Parts, O'Reilly's, NAPA, and CarQuest are the only auto parts stores in my area - and they're all chain stores... there's no mom-n-pop stores around me to buy them from otherwise I would. So I choose rockauto for my stuff because of pricepoint and the parts/customer service are better in general.
As easy as driving down to Florida and trading trannies with me.
As Clown said, Cobra and Uniden are both proven brands. They have a great reputation and have excellent quality. Midland is another great brand and I've heard good things about Texas Rangers (can't vouch for them personally though).
I have a cobra 19 LTD classic in mine with a 5' Centuryclass fiberglass whip. I'm running a Cobra powermic and my SWRs are great. No complaints whatsoever. I was running a 5' Firestik but it quit working on me. I was given two of these Century-class whips and was a little leary but I've had great luck... still on the first one and have one as a spare.
I bought mine from O'Reilly's for about 30 bucks... it's Metric thread so if I want SAE I gotta spend another 30. It's decent, wouldn't use it making a living as a professional mechanic, but for as often as I'm using it this kit is great.

That should do just fine. I also agree with Basslicks' reply above this. I use FireStik antenna, and I haven't had a problem. Wilson is also a proven brand, but that doesn't mean other brands won't work. As for microphones, I stick with Astatic. Again, this is because of their long history and my personal satisfaction with their products.

Dumb question not worth starting a new thread for: On a 1999 XJ are the cruise control switches in the steering wheel supposed to be illuminated? (Mine aren't. May not be worth the hassle of fixing if they are supposed to light up.)
The cruise control itself works fine as long as you remember the control positions by feel when driving at night.

Currently doing my cross country drive. Front bottom shock bushings have worn down to the point of causing clunking with turns. Is it still ok to drive? Shocks are a couple years old and I don't have the $500 this shop wants to replace all the shocks

You're fine; it's just annoying. If the shocks are still performing satisfactorily, you can just replace the bushings
