XJ Ask the Question Thread
Can I swap out the radiator/overflow bottle out of my 2000 into a 89 with the retarded closed system? Will it work? Can I make it work? Is it an upgrade over the 89 radiator at all? The 89 is overheating at an idle, even with electric fan running. Give it a little throttle temp drops like a rock? Will a cooler tstat help, or is the water pump not working correctly? Radiator out off the 2000 was in it for less than 5,000 miles. Any help would be appreciated. I'm new to the older xj's. My first was the 2000 but it's now retired haha

Nope but some prefer the open system.
No, why would it?
Or clutch fan... sounds like the previous owner didn't care much for maintenance
Well it probably doesn't have too much stop leak built up then LOL

Swapping out an AW4 and I think the torque converter was not fully seated on the shaft before the bell housing was bolted to the engine and may have bent the flex plate. removed/reseated the T/Converter and reinstalled. Now the flex plate seems to ride close to the inspection plate, starter engages, but doesn't disengage from the teeth easily. Crankshaft sensor may also not be sensing the position. Turning the crankshaft via the 19mm pulley nut is very hard. Any other ideas.
Also: Removing and/or reseating that trans. oil dipstick tube from the pan tube with the O-ring is the hardest part of this swap.
Any tips.

Does IRO not make a 5.5" coil spring anymore? I was gonna order a pair friday but I can't find it anymore. They still have the 5.5" lift kits.
Also, any special tricks to getting the harmonic balancer/crank pulley off? Without a puller? Or is the puller the only way? Mine is falling apart and causing it to hit the mechanical fan. Got a new one ready to go on.

Yup. Need rad, bottle, hoses. Delete the stupid HCV too before it breaks and pisses coolant everywhere (or in your face).

Classic clutch fan or water pump issue.

You can test clutch fan with a rolled up piece of newspaper. Stick it in the fan blades while the engine is cool-not-cold, and again after its fully warmed up. You should be able to stop it when cool-not-cold, and it should be quite a bit more forceful at operating temperature. The bi-metal spring on the front of the fan kicks in around 160f ambient temp so it can be a bit difficult to get it all the way there.

title of video is "bad fan clutch?" Guess he's not familiar with how an electric fan works.
