How much you need will depend on the paint and his many coats they recommend. It'll probably be between a gallon a gallon and a half. My favorite budget paint to use on cars is called Valspar LIC40, its considered fleet paint and can be had at any Valspar dealer and they can mix it to any color you'd want. A gallon costs about $120 here, its a single stage with all the proper additives to keep the paint from fading. It's extremely easy to use and has a high PPM which means it'll cover well with less paint, and it'll cover other colors better. They'll also sell you the activator and the reducer, I believe a can of each is like $20 for enough to do a gallon. If you're spraying it make sure to use disposable filters on your gun. With 2 full days of sanding, 1 more of full prep, and a day of painting I turned my girlfriends Neon from this:

I messed with my gun and was able to lay down the paint with a smooth bedliner kind of texture:

She drives 3 hours a week on gravel, she's been nicked by people parallel parking and there's no spider cracking or chips. I couldn't even scratch it with my knife. So I'd says it very worthy of being used on a trail rig.

I've got the 4.0 auto. It has a block heater, it works great, but the tranny fluid is so thick sometimes that it has a hard time moving for the first little bit. So yea, I was thinking of putting a magnetic pan heater on the tranny oil pan. Bad idea?

I was going to tell him the amount of paint he'll need depends on what type of roller he's going to use. .

Good job on the Neon!

My only concern is the heater might get knocked off. I drive a 5-speed so no idea if the pan is even steel, lol. This might not be an issue if your XJ just stays on the street.

When was the last time you changed the ATF? There are synthetics that will help. Don't forget the differentials. 80w90 dino juice feels like you left the brakes on when its super cold.

I bought a 96 cherokee a while ago and I no longer need or can afford to store it. I'm trying to get it ready to sell. One problem that has me confused is that when i'm driving, if i press the brake pedal, sometimes the radio will turn off, as soon as I let off the brake, the radio returns to normal function. Any thoughts?

I know people who spray, but I'm just asking for the sake of knowledge. The XJ in question hasn't been purchased yet

Default 1995 4.0 motor in a 1989 body

I'm a newbie here and would like to see if anybody can help me out. My daughter bought a 1989 cherokee from somebody and they put a motor in it from a 1995 cherokee in it. The motor ran in the 1995 cherokee but it was totaled and now since she has bought this thing the motor has never run in the 1989 yet. It seems to have no spark and I just wanted to see if anybody knows if all the sensors and computer is the same in these two years or if there is something that I need to change. And what can I check to try and get this thing running for her? Thank you in advance for any suggestions

They are not. In fact almost all of them are completely different, except basic parts like the air temperature sensor. Was the Jeep bought not-running?

I don't know if the sensors where changed. I think the 1995 motor still had all the original sensors in it.

That's not good... I'll have to let someone else chime in on how you might be able to tell as I'm not very familiar with earlier models.

What I do know is that there are significant differences around the intake manifold. Sensors in the intake manifold (Throttle Position Sensor especially) aren't compatible between years, so if they were swapped over there's at least a chance that other parts were changed as well.

The original Renix intake side looks like this:

Note the size of fuel pressure regulator toward the front of the engine, the interesting vacuum harness, and the triangular shape of the intake hose where it screws into the throttle body.

OBD-I years like 1995 look like the above. No vacuum harness, sensors on the rear of the throttle body, intake hose is held on with a clamp, fuel pressure regulator is smaller.

One can only hope that if those parts were changed over, key components like the alternator, crank position sensor, and distributor sync generator (aka camshaft position sensor) were too.
