Sorry never saw your post. I'd say im relatively inclined. I've done everything else on my jeep besides the SYE. I have the shafts out now and cleaned out the diff. Don't have the tools or the knowledge to regear, not sure how to replace bearings or much at all with this thing. I can cut off the mounts with my angle grinder but I don't have a welder. So very limited in what I can do unfortunately.

Is a gauge cluster replacement on a 88 just plug and play?
Heres what mine has: Big gas gauge and speedo, coolant temp gauge, volt gauge, oil pressure gauge and big Gas light.
I want one with all of the above and A Factory Tach. My old XJ had it and I dont want to install an aftermarket one for the ease of a cluster swap.
I also read somewhere that the 91 and under clusters can reset mileage to whatever your gauge reads. Is this true?

Second, the cluster is plug and play. You'll need to replace the oil pressure sending unit and the coolant temperature sending unit.
Details, year ranges, and how to:

First, altering mileage is a federal crime, though it isn't hard if you look it up. Second, the cluster is plug and play. Also I mentioned I had a pressure and coolant gauge. Moth mechanical needle not dummy light. I'm just missing the tach.

How would I be altering the mileage of my jeep? I said I read that I could set it to the exact mileage from my original cluster. If I mentioned I was "zeroing" my mileage I think your statement would be valid.

Sorry for not noticing that you already had the senders. I skimmed your post and provided info and a link because I was and am at work. The tach is plug and play, so you won't have any issues if you use a cluster from the appropriate year range.

Federal law is worded in a way that you can't alter the mileage of anything. Even if you're matching an old cluster or adding miles to compensate for larger tires, it's illegal. It's common, and it isn't hard. That's all I can say in that regard; I'm only letting you know for the sake of your own understanding that it is considered a crime.

I feel like I spend way too much time in this thread..
ANOTHER cooling system question. I replaced the thermostat housing, thermostat, and upper and lower radiator hoses last night. I know it's pretty much impossible to get all of the water out of the system but I'm thinking I had to get as much out of it as anyone possibly could! Everyone always says put the 6 quarts of antifreeze in then top it off with water so it will be 50/50. I assumed there HAD to be less than a gallon of water in there so I planned to put a gallon of antifreeze, a gallon of 50/50 and top it off with distilled water. I was hoping to use as much distilled water as possible.. Anyway so I put the gallon of antifreeze in then I can only get half of the 50/50 in. I parked it on an incline, ran the engine while filling it, squeeze the upper hose to get as much air out as possible. Was there still that much water in the system after pulling off all of the hoses? I've only driven it for 15 or so miles so I'm guessing some more air is going to work it's way out but I can't imagine it's too much. Does a good amount of water stay in the heater core? This is frustrating.
