In 3, it will lock the TC.

Ok I see this is supposed to be an "ask question thread" so I'm gonna jump off topic to ask a question. When I first start my cherokee my oil pressure is fine. But as she warms up the pressure drops and fluctuates as RPM's do. I've changed the oil maybe 20 miles ago and it didn't help. The jeep does have 211,000 miles so I'm sure that's the problem but I was wondering if maybe there's an oil additive out there or if I'm just going to have to do a rebuild. All feedback is appreciated

TEST your oil pressure with a mechanical gauge which can be "rented" from your local parts store. VERIFY the oil pressure readings. Chances are your oil pressure sending unit is Kaput.

No, the torque convertor locks up. This isn't the same as going into 4th gear.

Torque convertors:

Interesting. I didn't think the TC still locks up in 3rd. Wouldnt that do damage to it if towing. I still learn things every day lol

This is normal. Oil is circulated by a mechanical pump driven off the cam shaft. Higher RPM = higher flow = higher pressure. As well oil viscosity decreases when it heats up which results in lower pressure.

What would testing it consist of? Like what do I do? And say the gauge is spot on, any suggestions on what to do from there?

But is it safe for the pressure to drop to almost nothing? I just changed the oil with 10w 30 which is supposed to be thicker isn't it?

My Renix ones do. They don't go directly into 3 lock. They really on the TCU to decide.

No. In this case you will want to screw in a mechanical testing gauge like cruiser54 suggested. The oil pressure sending units frequently croak. On a 2000 you want to verify that the sensor is bad instead of just throwing money at it as there is a bit of a problem with low oil pressure.

Nope.

By any chance does your coolant level mysteriously drop?

Good articles to read. Still doesn't explain why my trans is doing that on inclines.

Did you test your TPS and sensor grounds yet?
