If you have a Spicer double-cardan shaft (I assume so lol) the sky's the limit. Renix XJ transfer cases and YJ units will be a direct bolt-on, but any Jeep NP231 or NP242 will work.
Considerations include input gears since your AW4 is probably 21-spline, but they are interchangeable with NP231 and NP242s. See more here: http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge...nput_gears.htm
Also there's the matter of that vacuum switch. I'm reasonably certain that the vaccuum switch fits into the boss on later year NP231s.
Or you could run a twin-stick D300.

I do have a 21-spline AW4. I'm using a '96 D30, so the vacuum switch is just chillin' there, anyway. I don't care about the light on my dash; I have a shift handle that tells me what gear I'm in. I'd love a 300, but time and money are of the essence

A 231 or a 242 of close to the same year, 87-95? bolt in, you know the advantages and disadvantages of those cases I'm sure. I sa where someone flipped a d300 with an aw4, it's a gear driven case, so it's stronger, and, you can go twin stick.

Disconnect the wiring and pull up while rocking side to side
Should be able to leave it be and get a wrench on the bolt

Anywhere... That's spray paint. The can is sitting on the porch in the picture...
Your late model is obviously a little more than painting the top part.
