ah yes that beast. makes sense.
alright one last question and Ill let this thread rest
I need a new front drive shaft and in the thread "everything you need to know about your xj" it states that there is some kind of difference between the 84 to 85 drive shafts being a gkn style. It also states the older 2 doors could have a 4.10 gear ratio or a 3.31 gear ratio. Since I have to match the gears up if im swapping the rear end. Do I have to find all 84 85 parts to swap a rear end or will a slightly newer dana 35 swap without problems. And how do I know what gear ratio I have?

Email Jeep your VIN # and ask for the build sheet - it will say your gear ratio on it. If you are swapping the rear anyways (why?), don't swap in another d35. Find a d44 or a c8.25 out of another XJ. They bolt right in and are stronger.
pretty sure front ds is ruined from my transfer case blowing up. atleast inside the boot it has a bunch of metal chips. The rear I think just needs u-joints. I dont have the ability to fab anything so I rely on direct bolt ins :P I was under the assumption with my 85 the dana 35 would be the only direct swap. Ill start researching what it takes for the c8.25 swap

driveshaft isn't ruined unless it broke. Joint just needs to be rebuilt. You can do it in your driveway with some simple tools.

mine looks a lot different than that one. The ujoints joints need to be replaced but the part at the other end is what I think is ruined.

ohhhh you have the "stick in a can" gkn front ds. Throw it away and get a new double cardan shaft. Did you already swap your TC? If not the process can be made easier by doing both at the same time.
This should help:

yikes thats a headache. I have not done my tcase swap yet. I wanted to swap a 231 in there. If I get a np231 and I do a double cardan shaft that comes attatched to it, do I need to find one that is 21 spline? and will I still have the problem of the yokes matching up?

Hey guys, kind of a newb question I guess
If i upgrade my tires to 235s can I still use the 225 as a full size spare?
It's never been used so if I can save an extra $150 I woulnt even bother replacing it

yes you can, no issues. That's why donuts work. As always though, if you do end up needing to use it, don't keep it like that very long.

Ok, so there is this hissing in my engine bay and i have no idea what is. All the "mechanics" at the barber shop say a hose is busted, but which one? and its just an audible hiss.......suggestions?
Is there an attendant increase in engine noise with the hiss, perhaps as if it is having to work harder? The hissing noise created by the broken vacuum lines also caused the engine to make a deeper, rougher-sounding noise. Those vacuum lines are important for engine performance right there on the intake manifold. Hope this helps.
