Default 2002 GC Laredo fuel pump or cam sensor problem???

Hello all... Newbie here, thank you in advance for any help/info/advise you can offer me!!
Have a 2002 Grand Cherokee Laredo that developed a starting problem. Last week it seemed to drag a bit when starting, battery 3 yrs old so replaced it. Drove it couple times that day all fine till about the 3rd engine start up. Cranked fine, turned over but didn’t catch, after about 4 attempts she fired up. All was ok for a week… then on the way back from an errand yesterday it stalled on me at a traffic light, cranked it and started right up. Later yesterday afternoon went to grocery store and she died right smack in the middle of the parking lot. No coaxing her to start helped. Let it sit for a couple hours, went back and she fired right up. This morning I took it to a garage, cranked right up. No error light has come on.
Garage scanner/diagnostics indicated the cam sensor. So to the tune of 400 bucks there she sits at the garage being repaired. My research indicates this may not be the issue at all. Can anyone please offer experience/thoughts/expertise as to what is going on??
Thanks again for the forum, just found it and joined, will be back here many times I know. LOL, already have a couple other issues I would like to pick your brains about.

I just got a new track bar bushing and it is for the wrong bolt size, it is 1/2 inch which is to big. Would it be ok if I drill out the mount so I can use that size bolt?

Sounds like the crank position sensor on an XJ. A WJ Grand Cherokee is two generations removed from the XJ in terms of design. Some XJs will run with the cam position sensor unplugged. No idea about a WJ though.

Could also be a failing fuel pump.

As salad said crankshaft position sensor is a common failure with the 4.0 engine - and will cause the sudden dying you describe. Mine had the same issue for a while. Cam sensor almost never goes bad in my experience. It's a cheap part that's rather easy to replace - it would be my first step.

Okay, so long story short... My transmission cooler cracked in my radiator and i got coolant in my tranny. So i changed fluid and filter and gasket and she was great for a while. Also got a new radiator and flushed cooling system. I added some non slip stuff to her as well.... Now she is slipping really bad in 1st so i am expecting to do a tranny swap.... I figure while i have her out i can do an SYE and install an aftermarket tranny cooler. So my question is what transmission cooler do you guys recommend i pick up? And are there any other things i should consider while having her all torn apart?

I have a 99 Cherokee 4.0 and it's been having some strange electrical issues. I will get a spike in voltage that pins the voltmeter. The Jeep runs fine except sometimes I need to manually downshift (automatic).

I replaced the alternator and cleaned up a few of the ground contacts as well as added a new ground battery terminal and cable from battery to body.

I lost my fuel gauge and speedo yesterday but sometimes they will jump around along with the rest of the cluster or everything just dies although the Jeep will continue to run.

Not sure where the voltage regulator is, I've read it's in the PCM. Is that the box with the fuses and relays in it or the electrical system on the drivers side.

Any ideas as to what the issues could be?

Check the ground on the cluster. You might be getting bad readings on the gauges.

Crank sensor ftw! When I get a new Jeep I buy a brand spanking new crank sensor no matter what!

Default Signal problems

I have an '89 xj and a while ago my radio and all the items connected to my turn signal lever have decided to stop working unless you wiggle the ignition until the clock stays on. It has been a real hassle. I was wandering if anyone else has this problem and know of a way to fix it.

I'd guess it's a worn out ignition cylinder.

I doubt it, is say its a loose connection. I had a worn out cylinder and it didn't effective the electronics.

You're right. I was thinking it might be loose at ACC to jiggle power, but it wouldn't affect the multifunction switch.

Is there a sticky for engine stuttering problems?
