Default Which other parts to change?

So, it turns out the gunk collecting in the coolant overflow is probably from the exhaust that is venting into the coolant. Confirmed with chemical test, and the shop agreed. Since I'm not doing the labor, I decided rather than dump money into a mostly unknown engine, I'm having a crate engine installed.

The question.....What other parts would it be good to replace when the labor is essentially free/built-in-cost? Sensors maybe?

Already decided to put in a new distributor. The water pump is almost new. Fan clutch, electric fan and radiator are also all new.

Leaning towards a new AC compressor and condenser. The compressor seems to be original, and a 17 yo compressor dragging on the belt is already not giving me warm fuzzies.

For what it's worth, I have an 01. I would trade my coil packs for a distributor setup if it were reasonable. Coil packs are absurdly hard to test with a multi-meter, therefore making misfire diagnosing very difficult. Just do your yearly maintenance.

Definitely replace all those sensors on the back of the motor that are hard to get to when the engine is out.

I guess it's up to you. Definitely look at the frame rails around your steering box and check for hairline cracks. Maybe put a steering box spacer in while you've got a bunch of room. Or replace the box if it's super old.

Default Cutting wheel well unsafe?

I have a 99 grand cherokee wj limited. The stock tires are 245/70s. I put a 3 in. Lift on and bought 1.5 in. Spacers to try and accommodate and rubbing when I upgraded to 265/70s. I put them on today and found out when I turn I rub on the front bumper and aft of front fenders. Even when I took fenders off I was still in danger of rubbing on the unibody. Is there a safe way to make space for those tires or did I just flat out buy too big of tires.

OK. Thanks. I appreciate the input. I've never heard of issues with coil packs. But I guess since they're all mounted together it's more obnoxious than single packs per plug.

98 Xj 4.0

Anyone have a write up about how the sensors work with the computer to regulate air/fuel mixture? I've been looking around and can't find anything. Chasing a rich mixture around that's been burping carbon out the throttle once in a while.

The FSMs are available to explain sensor activity. The short answer is "most of them" contribute to fuel mix.

ECT
IAT
MAP
TPS
O2

Also any slobbering fuel injectors will cause issues running rich.

What so you mean by "burping carbon out the throttle"?

Well assuming you don't have the AC turned on and the temperature gauge doesn't immediately show overheating I'd rule the fan relay out first

Try the Grand Cherokee forum - this is for XJs, released in 1983.

Thanks for the reply!

Replaced the TPS, IAC and have a front O2 on the way since it read .29 volts at its highest reading. Cat is rattling and I think it's needed a new one for years (also on the way).

Long story short, smells like fuel when I try to crank it after running a while. Will cold-start fine but then when I get to the stop sign by my house, it'll crap out and take a while to start again. The one time this happened, a big puff of black smoke came out of the left side of the engine.

Measured fuel pressure at 45psi and never leaked lower than 35psi after the 5 minute test so I assume the injectors are ok.

Does the thermostat play a role in air/fuel? I think I remember one of you guys saying it didn't on the 97-'01s.

Thermostat, no.

Black smoke coming out of the side - that is very odd indeed - can you show us a picture of where?

Also I really suggest starting a new thread for this, if you haven't already. Something tells me this won't be a quick one!

Thanks! I tried but I think after the first few replies, it became me talking to myself/diary haha.

I'm going to replace o2 and will update the thread from there. Was just really curious about the black smoke as well. Bottom of my new air filter is dusted with black. Maybe the cat is just getting clogged once in a while and the rich exhaust is backing up into the intake?

Not so odd if he has a cracked exhaust manifold or a bad exhaust manifold gasket.
