Under normal operation, no problems at all. On a hot day, with the AC on, at a long traffic light or anytime I stop travelling at speed for more thant a few minutes, temperture shoots up from 210 to 250 in the blink of an eye. It doesn't creep up it shoots up. More out of panic than anything else, I switched from AC to Heat and after a minute or two, the temperature drops suddenly back to 210. It doesn't slowly drop it drops suddenly.

I do not think the electric fan is working properly but do not know how to test it but could a fan make the sudden change in temp i am seeing?

My totally amateur diagnosid is thermostat and i'll replace it as it is realtively cheap and one of the few auto repair projects i a comforatble completing myself.

Has anyone heard of or experienced this before?

Any and all suggestions welcome.
Thanks to SteveMongr, Cruiser54, NewKindofClown, RCGuyMike, Salad and any others I missed.

Replaced fan relay and electric aux fan began working properly. As a result, i am no longer overheating at idle or low speeds. Problem solved. I am also going to proceed with replacing the fan clutch with the HD model as it seems like a worthwhile upgrade.

Thanks again to everyone who took the time to help out this total newbie.

Slowly but surely I learning how to properly maintain this Jeep I love.

These guys are great. Cruisers site with FSM's is extremely helpful.
Speaking of that, where would I find info on a TPS in the manual?

Thanks in advance
Unfortunately a tire rotation did not solve my problem. was under it today yanking on all my steering components without anything budging. I have play in my steering wheel before it turns the tires. could that be it?

I replaced the clock spring and it looked pretty much impossible to screw up the alignment there. Does that mean someone had the pitman arm off at one point?

DS1310 (ZJ Drag link) worked fine in mine.... although I'm lifted 3.5". However, I had plenty of adjustment to be able to get the steering wheel straight.

If your XJ is lifted, are you still running a stock tracbar in the stock location?

Well. The transmission decided it wanted to overheat and boil again today. Anybody know what could be causing this. I went wheelin and right as we finished it started to slip real bad. Of course, acts just fine after it cools down. Not sure what's causing this, also got a fairly large B&M tran. Cooler installed but yet it still overheats. Any ideas?

My first thought is a clogged filter. But if it's overheating badly, the burned fluid isn't helping

I've drain and filled 4 times, then it overheated tonight, so that was pointless. Also, filter was changed about 5000 miles ago.

Not sure about pitman arm length, but it has about 5/8" more drop than in XJ IIRC.
