XJ Ask the Question Thread
Ive got a 93 4.0 5 speed that has had the same intermittent problem since i got the jeep about two years ago. It seems to show its face most when im accelerating after a rolling stop, usually after ive made a turn. i think fuel system because its like it running out of gas for a few seconds then clears up. Usually happens accelerating from second or third. I usually just keep the pedal in the same position when it starts doing it because it seems to do it longer when i move the pedal. It doesnt sound like too hard of a problem to track down its just got me thrown off because it does it after i turn so often. makes me think the turn i just made has something to do with it. Ive also kept up on all maintenance on the vehicle.
Can anyone help?
My husband has a 97 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo with 5.1 and the oild gage drops to 0 when stopped and when you drive it goes back up to the 1/2 way point. I have done a little searching and some things say its the oil sending unit and others say oil pump.

I assume the oil level has been checked? They'll do that when they get low.

So here I am...a newbie. I've been trying to figure out why my xj overheats. I have an interior temp gauge and for the last year it hasn't gone much over 210 or so. My problem lies to how fast it heats up. From my house to my school is about a mile. From a cold start to the time I get to class, I'm running about 215. If I idle for about 5 mins it already hits about 190, is this normal or do I have some issues? I don't even wanna drive it cuz I'm nervous that I'm gonna overheat. I replaced my fan clutch and since my A/C doesn't work I wired the aux fan to a switch but it's not really helping. I wanted to see if anybody else has this problem or how I should go about addressing it? A friend of mine says that I need to gear my axles since I'm running stock gears, but I don't see how that'll help my problem.

Heating up to 190° should be quick if your thermostat works. Then it should be between 190-210° when operating.

does it actually overheat or stays around 215? bc mine has always been around 210 and i have never had a problem with either of my jeeps
we check the oil often and just put a qt in less then 2 wks ago, there is no oil loss on the ground. We have noticed before that when it happens we top the oil off and its ok for another 2 wks but as of the last few days the jeep has also been chugging once in awhile at take off not always just intermittently.
Also have a headlight issue,(think it's the switch) he has all other outter lights but just no headlights and the bulbs are both good. when he turns the switch on the dash lights dim and still no headlight and when he turns it off the dash lights are normal again and still no headlights, would that eb the switch.
Okay, its a 93 cherokee country 4.0 automatic. I bought the jeep last june and the guy I bought it from "claims" the motor was swapped with a 4.0 from a 94 grand cherokee. I believe it's a 5-6'' inch lift. I have alot of trains where I live so I'm always stopped at the tracks waiting. If I'm waiting, my heat will not drop. I've climbed up to about 220 and I finally shut it off. I might go start it and just let it run to see how far it'll climb. I just want to get this heat problem figured out so I can take my jeep out camping and stuff without worrying that I'm gonna end up stranded.

I was kinda thinking that. I did the fan clutch less than 2 months ago. Now when I changed the fan clutch, I also broke my fan shroud. I want to get another one, but I live in a small town with no junkyard! The jeep sat for 4 years in some guy's yard before I bought it. I was thinking that I might flush my cooling system. I was also kicking around the idea that if this doesn't work I might pull my A/C and get an electric fan. I don't know what else to do.
