I'm looking at a few 99 cherokee's all in good shape. A few are lifted and fixed up and the others are stock. If I buy one of the ones lifted what should I be looking for as in tire size and type of lift, because I plan on pulling a 17' bass tracker boat and also going off road. Or should I purchase a complete stock Cherokee and do all the work myself. The stock cherokee's are $1200 less then the lifted ones. I have never owned a Cherokee but have really enjoyed my father-in-laws and decided to get my own. Thanks for the help

 

Try to get something with a Dana 44 rear axle, or at least a Chrysler 8.25 rear. You'll want to do a rear disc brake upgrade ASAP for towing that, and a rear Limited Slip Differential (LSD) wouldn't hurt. The downside is that Cherokees with Anti-lock Braking Systems (ABS) all had a Dana 35 rear, but that's the weakest of all the factory rear axle options.

Get the VIN of each one you're interested in, and send it to Chrysler via the Contact Us section of Jeep.com. Tell them you're comparing features before you purchase one, and ask them to send you a build sheet for each VIN.

As for lift height and tire size, it depends what type of wheeling you will be doing and how serious you get into it.

I'd buy it now if I had the money. Ask him why he's selling and how old the motor is. He may be having trouble with it. '98 is the best year to buy out of the 97+ years. Looks great, though, if it's running right.

I test drove it the other day. I can get it for $5800. It seems to drive good. I have no idea what im looking for besides the basic stuff like leaks, ticks, and smoking. I know the jeep itself has 386k but the motor has 110k. Also how do you know if all the upgrades on the axles and engine are legit?

 

You don't unless you disassemble them. Ask for receipts of purchase or installation.

 

Front lighting, fog switch.

 

I did a small 2" in June and my leafs were previously really saggy. But I installed with new leaf packs. I haven't noticed any thing up until like 3 days ago. I never had any vibes after the installation or anything. Still sound like u-joints? I'm sure every u-joint on the jeep is stock....

For those of you looking at this post, my original problem was having a grinding noise after letting off the gas. Just for a second or two though, after that nothing, and while on the gas it is silent.
