Have you tried the love tap either just above the handle or just to the upper right of the handle as you pulling the handle. The technic known as the xj love tap

Well then next step. There may be a write up. You have to climb into cargo area and take off the lower part of the cover off the lift gate and try to get to the mechanism. I never had to do it personally so hopefully someone who did can quote this and give feedback. After you do get it open lube it up so it doesn't get stuck again...ok I'm to lazy to delete what I just wrote so please let it go lol

Could be leaking on the left or glazed pads, probably front... I barely notice my rear brakes on a good day, I don't think any problems with just one side of them would count for much haha

Check hoses and brake pads and also make sure the left caliper is compressing correctly

Sand paper can fix the brake pads if you want to save some coin.

Pads and rotors are good with maybe 15k on them... Antifreeze leak has been sprayed all over the soft line and has started acting bad today... Gonna pull them tomorrow and check it all out.

Guys, how hard and expensive is it to replace a head gasket on our beloved XJs?

Depending on your driving habits & quality of pads, 15k they maybe worn.

If there is coolant. Take some sand paper and hit them. Easy fix.

I'll take a look tomorrow and figure out where the hell that leak is from and run new soft lines up front

I had a local guy do a valve job on my old YJ. Charge...$150 (plus parts). It's really not that hard. I live in a condo, and the fine is more than that. So, I had to have it done. But, it's not that hard. If you do the head gasket, do a valve job (depending on mileage). My opinion.
