If you just put in new pads they'll take a few to set in the rotors.

Is this why Wranglers get worse gas mileage as well? How Wranglers differ from XJ's..... Does the Wrangler drivetrain have a significant difference in the gearing ratios? It just seems like Wranglers are much more "torquey" than a Cherokee. They seem more like "truck trucks" than an XJ ?

Are Grand Cherokees as reliable as XJ's ? They seem to be a totally different grade of car for the SUV/soccer mom set. Are they worse? More bloated? Why don't more people mod the Grand Cherokee and ignore the extras? Heavier? More expensive? The forums seem to be hugely slanted towards XJ's where GC's seem to be disposable SUV's.

I don't think so. Most YJs around here are 4cyl Manuals, and I think they are heavier. So they may be underpowered and get worse mpgs.

Well they have a frame

You are right sir. It is biased.

But I do think the v8 zj tranny is a heap of scrap metal.

Well I own both an xj and a wj. In my opinion wj is just to nice to offroad with. Now I have had mine through mud and snow, and it does perform well. But I would never take it were I take my xj.

Rather have axle problems than tranny problems. Easier to swap an axle.

Nope, old pads. I just yanked the calipers off to clean the rotors and fix the snapped bolt.

Gearing ratio is the same in Wranglers actually, but you'll see weight differences sometimes. The primary reason that Wranglers get worse mileage is their shape. The XJ is commonly called a "flying brick" but it's much better aerodynamically than a TJ. At least our windshields are slanted, and even curved!!!

IMO depends on the Grand Cherokee. I view ZJs as just a heavier XJ with rear coils... depending on options. Certain parts are notoriously bad, like their auto transmission, D44a, and I think one year came with CV front axles. A ZJ or WJ can be built but you can pretty much say that about any vehicle. An XJ is lighter and cheaper, and earns more "truck" cred for fewer luxury features. Manual windows, locks, transmission, and NP231 lend to that idea. Aftermarket support I believe is a reflection of this: All the guys who were concerned about price vs. breaking it while wheeling take the XJ path, and people buying "cars" like soccer moms just went to the Grands - not necessarily that one is inherently superior, as there are trade-offs.

Personally I think WJs look like bloated whales and the WK/WK2s are just an embarrassment to "SUVs". More like "SVs", there's no U left in a vehicle with 20" chrome wheels, electronic transfer case, and this SRT8 bullshyte

There's a guy on Craiglist selling an xj brush guard with poweder coat coming off and mounting tabs bent, he's asking $200. I was going to offer $100

I'd offer $50 to negotiate if you really want one. No way I'd pay $200, and I wouldn't personally pay more than $50.
