Angry Unknown problem w/ 4WD

When in 2wd there are no issues or noises. When I go into 4wd (mainly in 4 high) there is a metallic grinding sound coming from the front d/s wheel. I have been told it could be a transfer case issue but from where the sound is coming from, I know its the front wheel. I am unaware as to what it could be. I was told potentially a ujoint but figured I would check to see if anyone had a similar issue. The noise is only present when making left turns ion 4WD. Any ideas as to what it might be would be greatly appreciated. New to owning this Jeep and owning Jeeps in general.

First off, i hope that you are aware you shouldnt be using 4hi on pavement. I say that because you didnt specify you were using 4hi off road or on road.

With that being said, a U joint is a prime suspect. I've heard alot of different sounds from a bad U joint. A grinding sound is not out of the question at all.

Like angry bird chirping? Could be the front driveshaft.

The sound is almost as if there’s a metal
bar dragging on the ground (best way to describe it there wasn’t anything actually dragging). I did use 4hi on pavement but only for a short while to test it. Went on gravel to test as well and sound was still present

Ill have to check fluids. I know that it makes the sound on loose gravel too. I tried it just to make sure it worked before I bought it and it had the noise (on regular pavement for a short time) and then on gravel.

"I can't see how it would be 4wd related, but check that the metal dust covers aren't rubbing on the brake rotors or have a rock stuck in there. That usually sound like scrapping metal, sometimes worse when turning and sometimes mistaken for a bad wheel bearing.

How would I be able to tell if it was the u joint though? Would that make a metal grinding sound if it went bad?

Just now thought of this.

A while back I had a grinding sound in the front it was more of a "tin" or sheetmetal grinding sound if you understand that lol
It was the little dust shield that goes in the end of the axle tube. The axle shaft passes through it and it kinda clips in the end of the tube. Anyway it had popped out and was spinning with the shaft and would rub on the tube and make a grinding sound. Super easy to check for this one

I’ll have to check that now that I’ve had a couple people bring up the dust shield. I would think it is was the ujoint it wouldn’t even engage into 4h properly in the front? So hopefully it’ll be as simple as the dust shield rather than have someone replace the ujoint

drive forward & reverse slowly in very tight circles, if you get a clunky sort of sound, almost certainly the u-joint in axle

The only way you're gonna find what you're looking for is to GO LOOK!

Around the Jeep that is. In these parts, we call it "noggin pokin".

That's where you use your God given senses to inspect YOUR Jeep for problems. We can only provide you with guidance as to where to poke your noggin.

There's no Silver Bullet cure you're gonna find from a keyboard
