Default Can you HEAR 4wd?

So i did some major (for me) offroading this weekend. Lots of loging roads, mud, steap narrow rocky passes, and even some snow.

Anyway, when I had it in 4wd it sounded different. Not from the front tires pulling, but I think i could hear the drivetrain more. didnt sound really loud or unhealthy, but it hummed a little. If the driveshaft and everything is always turning in 2wd anyway, i was wondering if it was normal that it made more sound just from having torque applied.

Quick question about this. While I was under the jeep changing the oil, I grabed the front drive shaft right where it enters the front differential and turned it back and forth. I could turn it a little bit, and could hear it turn all the way to the passanger side wheel hub. Is that normal? Sounded like a metal bar sliding around in a metal tube.

manuall tranny was in neutral
transfer case was in 2HI

My 91 Xj has a slight wine when driving above a crawl in low range. That is a perfectly healthy noise. Just remember to regularly check your fluid levels in all gear boxes. Your 93 I believe has the vacuum disconnect front axle just like my 91. with everything in 2 wheel drive, hearing the axle turn inside the tube is fine when you turn the front driveshaft by hand. The axle going over to the passenger side is actually 2 pieces. 1 is inboard of the vacuum disconnect and the other is outboard. So, while in 2 wheel drive only the inner portion of the axle shaft is moving when you move your front drive shaft.

I think your feeling the comination of Backlash in the diff and the play in the CV joint etc. Likely not a problem...jmo

Mine has a slight whine in 4HI...that's how I can tell when it doesn't kick out when I go back to 2WD.

I just can't think of anything that changes between 2wd and 4x4 in the front end besides the drive shaft being engaged at the xfer case. Is that correct?

Maybe I'll try to record a short video of it driving in 4x4 for you guys to watch and see if it seems normal. It might be, but every other 4x4 that i've driven in the past, its been pretty seamless. But, those didnt have solid axels either...
