Default 4wd grinding sound

I have a 1996 jeep cherokee with a 5 speed transmission that i bought a month back, and as i tried to 4WD the first time it worked perfectly, but i went to a county lake and wanted to drive up a steep dirt hill and when i pulled the lever back it worked fine but when i went to push the gas pedal, all it made was a terrible grinding sound. what could that be?

Possibly not fully engaged. Check the transfer case shift linkage for proper adjustment. Were you using low range?
