Have you ever shined a light into your oil filler hole to see how much sludge build-up you have?

And yes, ATF added to the oil is something that's been done for years.

See post # 11 in this thread.

I run amsoil oil and filter....not because I think it's the best, but because we stock it in the shop.

I still change it every 3000 miles though

(Oh, amsoil does have a high zinc content though, which is a plus)

Amsoil is good. I used it til it was all gone after selling my towing business. Used Rotella in most rigs. Amsoil in my 360 Dodge, wife's PT Cruiser, Yamaha Quads including a Raptor, and my Supercharged Miata.

Funny story. I emailed Amsoil Tech when all I had left was 15/40 Diesel Marine oil left and asked if it would be okay to use in my cars and everything else. He repied and said "Go ahead and use it".

Yeah, i used to have an amsoil "preferred customer account" or whatever it was called to get it at a discount. Good stuff but I couldn't justify it in two low mileage vehicles (ford plow trucks) and two inline 6's haha.

I'm going to try the Rotella 15-40 in my rig tomorrow.

Also going to try the ATF before I change it and the mystery oil once I'm done as I have a Tick Tick Tick.

Question is, can I do this safely with only 96k miles on my 2000 XJ or should I be doing something else.

Go for it. You'll be fine. The biggest thing is get a good filter (if that hasn't been hammered home enough already on here haha).

Question about Marvel Mystery Oil... How long can you run it in your oil before needing a change? Can I drain out a quart, add MMO, run it for a day or two, then do the full oil change?

Yes. I drained a quart of oil, added a quart of MMO and ran it for 1,500 miles.
You can leave MMO in as long as you like.
