Default Header removal

How difficult is it to remove the header on a 98 4.0? (not meaning the difficulty of stuck bolts) Like accessibility to the bolts, room to pull it out etc. The weld for the collector is cracked and I gave a leak.

My 98 wasnt too bad, just throttle stuff, air intake, then wiring, the. Actual intake manifold, take time to Search for all bolts before getting rammy, some are halfway hidden and shared with exhaust manifold. Then header is easy to see, but my dynomax header was kinda tricky to install Due to how tubes ran and weren't how originally so bolt access was kinda funny, but still doable and way cheaper than a mechanic, even though I am one, most with tools, extensions, and universal sockets/swivels, and wrenches can do this in a afternoon.

I'm wondering if it can be welded without taking it off. It's just the old weld where it goes 2 into 1 and it's not in the crease of the Y. I can feel the whole thing just by laying under the jeep.

Just replaced my 99 with APN, was fairly easily, no special tool needed.

If you are replacing with OEM, installing will be as easy but APN exhaust manifold runs a little different and you would need a gear wrench to excess the bottom bolts when installing.

It should only take a few hours. The torque on the intake manifold and the header bolts arent very high. I would get a new header rather then welding it. Those stock headers will keep cracking. Its made of some weird funky metal

Not a hard job, just takes a little time. I have a basic set of tools and easily completed the job in just under 4 hours. I do not have any ratchet wrenches and had no trouble getting to any of the bolts.

Invest in a set (or just 9/16) of ratcheting wrenches. I couldn't imagine doing the header on my 98 without them.

I converted to the APN header, in and out in a couple hours. The secret is to soak the fasteners with penetrant for a week before install. Overall not that big of a job. And yes ratcheting flex head wrenches make life sweet on this job.

Just did an APN on my 92. Torque spec is only 23ft/lbs for the bolts and 17ft/lbs on the studs. 9 bolts in all 2 studs. Fairly easy, getting the intake to sit back on the heads dowels was a bit of a trick. Had to flatten some tubes but it fits nice.

All the bolts on mine were 14mm BTW, got a little dicey under cylinder 3 & 4. Standard box end wrench and a stuby 1/4" ratchet worked well.

Is there an instruction write up anywhere? YouTube has some showing taking it off but not the process.
