Default cherokee shuts off while driving

I have a 96 cherokee country 4x4 4.0HO 112,000 miles on it. It shuts down while is driving, but it starts right up and drives. It will do this 2 or three times while i am driving it or sometimes not at all. I noticed all Accessories stay on. I checked the battery charge and it is at 12V. I looked at the check engine light codes and all it shows is code 12 and code 11 (CPS). I tested the terminals on the CPS and there is no resistance. It is running a little high on temperature past 210 but never reaches the red zone (I flushed the radiator a couple of years ago so I know it needs a new one). Could high temperature cause this? Also, I re-built the connector to the TBP a couple of years ago, but what is doing now is not the same as it starts right awy. Any suggestions?

Could be a bad idle air control.

Is this when coming to a stop or completely randomly any time any speed?

Its my daughters car and so far it has done it while at a stop light. I have been playing with it and it has done it at home while at idle...very infrequently. It is coding the Crankshaft sensor.

The OBD system is pretty darn good at leading you to the culprit circuit. The primary suspect here IS the crankshaft position sensor.

If you replace it, do yourself a big favor and buy a Mopar crank sensor directly from Jeep. Aftermarket crank sensors are "hit and miss" with a whole lot of miss.

Those are the same things my jeep did when the cps went bad except I didn't get any codes. It is a ***** to reach. If I have to change it again I am taking it to the Mexicans.

I just looked at the exact definition of code 11. Camshaft signal or ignition signal.

So the cam sensor is also in play here as a possibility. Located inside of the distributor.

I'd also swap the ASD relay located inside of the power distribution center (black box under the hood) with another non-critical relay. I've also seen code 11 related to an intermittent ASD signal.

Here is a link to a guy with a similar problem.

I just took a look at the job and it is going to be a time consuming one for this backyard mechanic. Going to have to talk to my neighbor the professional mechanic to give me some hints or borrow some extensions as mine were too short. I am looking at disconnecting the transmission cable link and removing the bracket to make more room to reach the CPS. Another great weekend job...!!!

TJWalker... thanks again, the web links were very helpful. Will keep you posted.
