Has anyone seen the modification where you can add an angled or curved piece of tubing to the inside of the fuel tank for the vent pipe? My problem I would have in doing this is that my hands are too big for the large hole on the tank. I probably could have my daughter or wife help. Has anyone tried this or had any issues attaches tubing to the vent?
I'm not familiar with this concept. Are you having fuel sloshing back up out of the filler neck issue or something? Does this help it to vent better on inclines?
No. It's a mod you can make to add more miles to your driving. The tanks hold 20 or more gallons but the vent tube is lower so they only hold 15 or so. If you add a curved or angled piece from the vent tube, the tank will give you more space to add more fuel. In reading about it, the guy had to squeeze his hand together with the other hand to get it in. He said he did it with the tank still on the car and assuming there was fuel in it. I bought a new tank and want to make that mod. He said he used a bent piece of pvc and a hose clamp. I am not sure how he achieved this without the use of two hands. Another guy said he used 1/2" copper tubing, one piece being a 90 and the other about 3 inches long and soldered them together. He then used jb weld to attach the copper to the vent tube. I will probably do it this way.
FWIW
When I had a 96 that I bought new it would hold 20 gallons just fine. When I later replaced the tank and pump assembly ( with ones I bought from the dealer) because the original tank rusted out it also held 20 gallons just fine.
Who knows why one would only hold 15 gallons
Interesting. I fill up at 1/4 tank almost always and mine takes 14-15 gallons, so I'm thinking mine should hold the full 20. I kinda wish it would hold more though. When I changed out the pump and filler neck tube's I never thought about any of this.
Is the zj tank larger and compatible? I seem to remember it taking 20 gallons one time when I ran it low.
I have three 96's and when run to the point of stalling they will take18-19 gallons I do recall the mod that will let you fit another gallon or two in the stock tank. The vent tube is for the rollover valve system so fuel wont leak out, gas pumps will auto stop during filling, and in case of a rollover or extreme angles. Not sure if altering the rollover system will have any negative consequences.
Update: stalled out while pulling up to the pump... Just made it... was cutting out on turns and barely coasted to the pump.
Ran out of gas the other day, literally as I rolled up to the pump. Ended up putting in 19.57 gallons. I’ve never seen the ‘15 gallons’ you talk about, unless you’re going strictly by the fuel gauge. If I fill up at E, sure, about 15 goes in… but if I push my luck, clearly there’s more in there 😉
The OP's tank should be 20 gallons on his 96 but also found that aftermarket parts sellers offer the small tanks as being correct up through 96. So always possible that in the last 30 years the tank was replaced with a small tank

All very weird
This is the link I am talking about. Now I just need to figure out a way to get my hand in that opening. Also, hope that my daughter or wife can get the copper fitting on the end before the JB Weld dries up.
Just put a ZJ tank in my 01 XJ with the vent tube mod. Took 26.2 gallons. Had an issue with the XJ pump being to tall for the ZJ tank. Had to remove the little rubber feet on the bottom of the assembly and modify the aluminum shroud around the assembly. But it is in and has 50 miles on it with no leaks. The whole mod cost me $50 plus fuel to go pick up the tank. Im in AZ, and happy to have the extra range in my XJ. Vent tube upper end
