I am patching in the floor above the gas tank. The gas tank is a sealed containor and a spark can't get in. Do I need to remove the tank? Will heat cause a problem?
It's really to the sides of the tank and not really on the tank

I think it's a legitimate question. The fuel system is a "contained system" for specifically this reason, among others. I'm sure that others have successfully done it without removing it, and/or done other work in the vacinity of the tank without issues. I just am a novice and want to make sure I cover all my bases. It's now on the list of "to do's".

I've welded right next to the tank before, if I wasn't in a rush I would have removed the tank, instead I put a damp, (NOT SOAKING) wet towel around/over the tank. Didn't catch it on fire that time. Still probably not the smartest thing to do though.

Remove the tank there are other ways to create spark within a fuel tank that is totally sealed from outside exposure, if you have a loose ground or frayed wire inside tank it could and will create spark worse case scenario is no fuel but vapor and or vapor trails which will ignite even by static electricity! if welding on a tank empty the tank fill with water and detergent(laundry soap) flush ,and fill with carbondioxcide from exhaust pipe of another vehicle make sure it is totally sealed and traped then make every precaution,to proceed repairing gas tanks.
