20 gallon tank only fills up to 16 gallons!!!!
hi everyone. I have a 91 cherokee that only fills up to 16 gallons even though it is a 20 gallon tank. The gas nozzle keeps shutting off and the gas seems to be coming out of the vent tube in the filler neck, which I think is normal. I can force more gas into the tank, but the nozzle keeps shutting off. I got an additional 2.5 gallons into the tank, but I had to pull the nozzle handle about 100 times. Any help would be appreciated.

This may seem like a stupid question, but I have to ask- where's the needle on the gauge when you fill up? If it's on E, you're not necessarily down to your last gallon. Most gas gauges are intended as guides rather than specific measurements for what's in the tank- that's why, when you calculate fuel mileage, you're supposed to do it based on how many gallons you put in the tank, not by what your gas gauge says. You could be showing on E and still have 2-3 gallons of gas in the tank. I'll admit that 4 seems high, but each vehicle is different.

Get a one gallon can to carry with you. Run it until it quits and dump the gallon of gas in. Now go fill up an see what it takes.

Same answer as DBGrif97, Every tank has a reserve just incase you get to that very low point. Mine is about three gallons.

The guage showed empty and the low fuel light was on. I added 14 gallons, and the guage read almost 3/4 full. I then added 2.5 gallons by clicking the handle on the fuel nozzle about 100 times. The guage read higher than 3/4. As I was adding fuel, I noticed that fuel was coming out of the vent near where the nozzle goes. I know the guage is accurate, because it is almost on full, and I probably could have added more gas, but the station was crowded, and I couldn't nurse the gas in any longer.
