2x6 rocker
So I have some 2x6 1/4 thick I wanna throw on the jeep for sliders. I have the kit from hooligan to mount them once the rockers get cut out. Question is, will the 1/4 thick but to much? Will I have a hard time welding them in?

What machine are you using? I have welded plenty of 1/4" material to sheet metal with my Hobart Handler 185. I use .030" solid wire with 75/25 gas. You can weld 1/2" long beads or so. Focus the heat on the 1/4" material and flick it up to the sheet metal. Too much time on the sheet metal will melt it away.

Solid wire with shielding gas is the important part. Flux core wire will be a mess, burns too hot and will blow holes in the sheet metal bad. The 125 might have enough *** to penetrate the 1/4". You want to run your heat at the setting you use for 1/4", or close to it. At a lower heat setting you won't penetrate the 1/4" and will have to focus the weld puddle in one spot too long and will melt holes in the sheet metal.

It’ll be fine. 3/16” would be ideal, but if you got 1/4” use it. Look up the weight per foot on 3/16 vs 1/4. Won’t be much of a difference. Not building a race car.

Seen this in somebody’s post but don’t remember who; cut the rocker lower than you need and then fold it to where it is doubled. This gives you thicker sheet metal to weld to the 2x6. Never tried it so don’t know if it will work, just a idea that might help you. Let us know the results whatever you do cause it’s a mod that I would like to do.

1/4” is probably overkill but if you have it, might as well use it. I highly recommend cutting the doors and moving it up to the door sill. I did this mod here;

It works simply awesome! Especially if you are trying to limit your lift height! One of my most favorite and useful mods so far 👍
As far as the welding, practice on some scrap pieces first. Find the settings and method that works on the scrap before you weld on the Jeep. And don’t try flux core, won’t work well at all! Don’t ask me how I know...

Get some flat 1/8" to mend the metals better. 3/16" is the most I'd weld straight to sheet metal. Ordered a kit? Isn't it just an overpriced piece of angle iron?
